In November of last year, it was reported that Nicolas Cage would be Dracula for the film Renfield, based on the original character of Bram Stoker. British actor Nicholas Hoult will star in this dark fantasy and horror comedy created by Robert Kirkman and directed by Chris McKay. The story will follow the lackey of the vampire count in his first big crush when he loses his mind to a traffic officer named Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).
New photographs from the shoot published by People magazine confirmed the appearance that Cage will take in his role. The 58-year-old star wears a red suit and makeup that makes him look much paler, a key detail for vampires on the big screen. It should be remembered that, the iconic Count Dracula will not be the central face of this film, but his helper and slave this time in the hands of Hoult. It was previously played by Dwight Frye in 1931, and by Tom Waits in the 1992 version of Francis Ford Coppola.
According to the official synopsis, the plot focuses on “Renfield, who has had enough of having spent centuries as Dracula's footman, is looking for a new path in life and perhaps a chance to redeem himself when he falls in love with a bad-tempered traffic cop, Rebecca Quincy”. That is, it will be a cinematic adventure with various references to classic monsters, such as the famous Transylvanian vampire.
Renfield, due in 2023, is one of the current projects in Nicolas Cage's career. Recently, she also showed off in a trailer for the upcoming film entitled The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a black action comedy that stars alongside Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian). This year, it will also premiere The Old Way, Butcher's Crossing and The Retirement Plan.
On the other hand, Nicholas Hoult, known for his roles in Mad Max: Fury Road and the X-Men saga, will take the lead under the role of Renfield. It will not be the first time that the English artist has put himself in the shoes of a fanciful or monstrous character, in fact, he has already done so on more than one occasion with his portrayal of Hank McCoy (Beast), the film My Boyfriend is a Zombie and Jack, the Giant Slayer.
Renfield will be a very violent comedy
The spin-off of the original Dracula story was devised by Robert Kirkman, the mind behind the comic series The Walking Dead and Invincible. According to the comic book writer, the film will be “extremely violent and comical”. “It's a story about him being Dracula's henchman, and how horrible that job is. It is a funny and extremely violent comedy”, are his statements collected by the Comicbook portal.
Renfield is written by Ryan Ridley and is currently being filmed under the direction of Chris McKay. Kirkman will produce through his company Skybound Entertainment alongside David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst. Samantha Nisenboim is listed as executive producer. The cast will consist of Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Bess Rous and James Moses Black.
