In the context of World Water Day, the Secretariat for the Environment (SEDEMA) will hold the first Ecotechnics Fair for attendees to learn how to install a rainwater catchment system.
The fair will be next Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the Monumental Gate of Leones del Bosque de Chapultepec, the schedule is from 12:00 to 16:00 hours, admission is free, they do not request prior registration. The objective of the event will be to promote the installation of eco-technologies to capture rainwater and “promote the proper management of domestic wastewater”.
Harvesting rainwater is an ecological and sustainable initiative that can be of support to populations suffering from scarcity. Catchment systems on the roofs of houses serve to use and reuse the rainwater resource, whether for domestic use, family consumption, agriculture or can also be used in public buildings.
SEDEMA announced that “the installation of a rainfall harvesting system allows to reduce the pressure in the water distribution network, the pressure exerted on the city's aquifers, as well as the gas emissions that are causing climate change due to the energy that is no longer needed to pump everything. that water that supplies the city.”
That is why at their event they will give a course for the implementation of the water collection system, which should be close to the place where the resource will be used. In the same way there will be recreational and cultural activities, exhibitions by the installation companies and testimonies of people who combine water.
SEDEMA also highlighted that from 2019 to 2021, 31,239 rainwater harvesting systems have been installed in Xochimilco, bAzcapotzalco, Coyoacán, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, Tláhuac, Tlalpan and that last year it started a new modality of participation with a 50% subsidy.
They also shared the companies certified to implement the recruitment system, through the link you will be able to know the emails, addresses, names and telephone numbers: https://www.sedema.cdmx.gob.mx/archivo/directorio-de-empresas-instaladoras-de-sistemas-de-cosecha-de-lluvia.
What is a rainwater harvesting system?
It is a mechanism that consists of tubes, filters, water separators, pumps, gutters, tanks and various accessories for rainwater collection. To make the most of the resource, it must be installed close to the place where it will be used and according to the capacity to be used; for domestic use, the roof must be kept clean.
The benefits of harvesting rainwater are varied, one of the main ones being that it encourages the responsible use and care of the natural resource. In terms of environmental material, SEDEMA in its manual to implement the system stressed that it reduces the need to transport it long distances and this means that pipes and distribution means are less used.
The implementation of rainwater catchment systems helps reduce water withdrawal from aquifers, reduces runoff to drains and prevents flooding and waterlogging.
With regard to the benefits to the family economy: as it is a system that only requires initial investment in the short term, the investment is recovered because smaller payments are made on water bills.
