Sebastián Muñoz made his debut this Wednesday, March 23 at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play 2022, measuring in round 1 of group 2 against world number one, Spanish golfer Jon Rahm.
The Bogotá had to face a difficult challenge in the world golf championship of the PGA Tour, which will conclude on Sunday, March 27. The South American athlete managed to qualify for this tournament after his good performance in The Players and was included in a complicated group of the event that organizes a total of 16 groups, each of four golfers. One placed between 1st and 16th places in the world; another between 17-32; the third between 33rd and 48th; and the last between 49-64.
Muñoz, who was part of the last group of players and is currently number 58 in the world, was paired with world number one Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed (23) and Cameron Young (40).
The coffee player faced Rahm at 2:50pm Colombian time and recorded a 64-stroke card until the 16th hole of round one with a balance of two birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars. For his part, the Spanish golfer recorded 59 strokes out of 64 total shots in 16 holes and won the first day of the championship held in Austin, Texas, United States.
The Colombian (blue mark) only managed to take advantage on the third hole, as can be seen below:
In this competition, the format contemplates that the player who scores the most points (after facing his three rivals) will advance to the round of 32 in the fight for the title in the North American country. It should be clarified that each victory gives a unit and the draw gives each golfer half a point.
In round 2, scheduled for Thursday, March 24, Sebastian will face world number 23 Patrick Reed and will end his participation in the Dell Technologies Match Play on Friday, March 25 against fellow American Cameron Young, current 40th place in the world. The event will be broadcast for Latin America through ESPN's Star Plus signal.
The last winner of this tournament was Billy Horschel, who defeated Scottie Scheffler in the 2021 final, a year after the event was not held because of the health emergency caused by covid-19.
After the end of The Players 2022 tournament, Spaniard Jon Rahm managed to retain the number one more week in the PGA world rankings, in which TPC Sawgrass winner, Australia's Cameron Smith, climbed to sixth place.
Chilean Joaquín Niemann and Mexican Abraham Ancer improved and placed 18th and 20th on the list, and Sergio García, twenty-sixth, progresses two and returns to the 'top 50' at 49th place.
Sebastián Muñoz (from 66 to 65) also rose from Bogota after even dreaming of victory in The Players, although he could not keep up the pace on the last day. Mexican Carlos Ortiz drops to 75th place and Spaniard Adri Arnaus, who fought to the end for victory in South Africa, progresses to 80th place.
