After the accident of a school route that overturned in the municipality of San Andrés, Santander, the International Hospital of Colombia (HIC) reported that it received another injured minor on Thursday. The health center assured that with this new patient they are treating five affected by the accident.
“Today, March 24, in the morning, a 13-year-old patient with hip fracture was admitted. He is stable and the institution will continue his treatment that he had already started at the hospital in Malaga,” said Frank Serrato, the medical director of HIC to Blu Radio.
Serrato also gave a new report about the two minors who were transferred on March 23 and who were in the most serious state of health among all those injured in the accident.
The first case is that of 10-year-old Yareli Castellanos Sierra, who was diagnosed with severe polytrauma, severe head trauma and some fractures to both clavicles. “The minor spent a relatively stable night, under the influence of medication,” the medical director explained to the aforementioned media outlet. Today we are going to perform a control tomography scan and according to the findings and evolution, we will begin the plan to wake her up and be able to assess her neurological condition.”
Jenny Gabriela Osorio Avila is the other minor who has a more serious state of health. The case of the seven-year-old girl was complicated because the doctors of the García Rovira Regional Hospital in Malaga did not endorse her transfer to Bucaramanga until they managed to stabilize her. Jenny Gabriela was diagnosed with multiple trauma, severe head trauma, fracture of the right clavicle, blunt chest trauma with right pneumothorax with fracture of the costal arches and blunt abdominal trauma.
In the new medical report, Serrato noted that, “she had a ruptured kidney and spleen and it was necessary the night before to take her to an interventional radiology procedure for the intervention of bleeding.” The procedure was successful and the minor is already stabilized.
With regard to the other two minors who were admitted to the health center on Tuesday, the medical director indicated that they are stable and that within 24 to 48 hours they could be discharged.
The event occurred on March 22 when the bus rolled about 250 meters into the abyss, with 25 children and five adults on board, on the Malaga road. Six children died in the incident and 17 more were injured.
Authorities identified the six minors who lost their lives: Aldair Gomez Diaz, Yuley Estefany Pedraza, Esneider Mauricio Jerez, Damaris Caceres Mahecha, Julian Camilo Diaz and Erick López Avila.
This was the first day of operation of the school route service, which was designed by the mayor's office of the municipality. The objective was to transport the students of the La Laguna de Ortices Institute who live in nearby villages and thus avoid having to walk so many kilometers to go to school and back home.
Faced with the reasons behind the accident, Santander Governor Mauricio Aguilar Hurtado said that the roads were in good condition, so the condition of the road was ruled out as the cause of the accident. The Attorney General's Office and designated investigative groups clarify the information to reach the case behind the incident.
For its part, the Superintendency of Transport recently ruled on the accident and recently revealed that the vehicle did not have the documentation required to provide the school route service. It appears that the vehicle did not have an operating card and registered three traffic accidents in 2007 and 2008.
