“President César Gaviria I ask you for an appointment”: Roy Barreras will try to unite the Historical Pact and the Liberal Party

After former President César Gaviria, also director of the Liberal Party, announced that he will no longer make alliances with the Historical Pact, the senator-elector of that coalition, Roy Barreras, announced who will request an appointment with him to restore relations for the first presidential round.

This was said by the congressman during the morning of this Thursday, March 24, in a press conference, attended by the vice-presidential candidate Francia Márquez and the entire legislative bench of the Historical Pact. Gustavo Petro, presidential candidate, was there for the photo, but then he left.

In his announcement, Barreras excused himself for the criticism sent to him on Wednesday by Francia Márquez, which is why the head of the liberals disengaged himself from joining Petro in the presidential elections.

“César Gaviria must be respected. Agreements are made with the different ones. All our hands stretched out and we started to create bridges. President Gaviria, I ask you for an appointment,” said the political leader.

However, although Barreras somehow scolded the social leader for her questioning Gaviria, during the press conference she assured that “Francia Márquez must be loved because she represents the most vulnerable,” the senator said, in turn saying:

Now, after this announcement, the congressman for petrism is expected to meet with Gaviria in the coming days to remedy the ties that were broken after Marquez's statements, which Roy Barreras himself distorted hours ago.

“I have never denied working with the Liberal Party. We've never said that. We always said that the Liberal Party as such today all the openness to move forward. Another thing I said is the problem with César Gaviria as a person. I said that he represents neoliberalism, more of the same and this country wants change,” said the vice-presidential candidate of the Historical Pact this Wednesday, March 23, when she became official as a candidate in that appointment.

Statement that did not go well with the head of the Liberal Party, who responded by means of a statement stating that dialogue with the Historical Pact is “unfeasible” and called talks with that left-wing and center-left platform “over”.

After that encounter, in his own way, Senator Barreras indicated that the allegations against former President Gaviria were a “mistake,” and he alluded to the lack of experience that Francia Márquez would have in “building unity” with different political sectors in Colombia.

Faced with the reactions that his message provoked among his followers on Twitter, Roy Barreras opened a thread in which he criticized improvisation in the construction of political alliances as well as taking the opportunity to elaborate what should be the campaign strategy of the Historical Pact for the coming months.

“Very difficult like that. In relationships of this level you can't improvise. Applause from the excited gallery. Closed doors to build governance. To squander the efforts made to add and win in the first round is not a good idea. Still winning, you have to rule!” , he said.

Francia Márquez also responded to him and, in dialogue with La FM, assured that he remains in his firm decision and assured that Roy Barreras is the one who is wrong. “It's probably a mistake for him, but I haven't said anything that this country doesn't know,” he said.
