Oscar 2022: all the nominees for Best Film that can be seen on streaming

A few days after the big film ceremony, we list all the films nominated for the highest award that are available in digital format

Next Sunday, March 27, the new edition of the Oscars will be broadcast from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, in the United States. The most important gala in Hollywood will award the best of the season from the films, to the actors and directors, to the team behind the scenes that made each production possible. In Latin America, the awards can be enjoyed by TNT signals.

Regarding the event, we recall which are the nominees for Best Film that can be seen on streaming platforms.

The power of the dog

Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee perform in this psychological, western-style drama under the direction of Jane Campion. Two brothers own a ranch, but one will develop an enmity with the other because he decided to marry a widowed woman with a teenage son. Man will make life impossible for this family in different ways. Available on Netflix.

Adam McKay directs this satire from the Netflix catalog starring Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, who give life to two astronomers trying to alert the world to a meteorite that could impact Earth and destroy it completely. Also performing are Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, Himesh Patel, Melanie Lynskey, Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep.

Dune

Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel returned in 2021 with an adaptation directed by Denis Villeneuve. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the role of Paul Atreides, the story focuses on the conflict around Arrakis — a planet also known as Dune — after it became a great power in the vast universe. This is how an interstellar war will be unleashed only with the aim of seizing the long-awaited power that holds this territory. It was released on HBO Max.

CODA

This coming-of-age bet follows a young teenage girl who comes from a deaf family: Ruby, aged just 17, has to help her parents and brother in the fishing business they run in Gloucester, Massachusetts. When she discovers that she has a great passion for music, she will have to make a decision that could change the course of her life... stay to continue being the support of her relatives or studying music a long way from her hometown. The film was released on Prime Video.

King Richard: a winning family

Also on HBO Max, we can meet Richard Williams, father of renowned tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, who inspired this biographical production starring Will Smith. With a very disciplined upbringing and a steely temper, he managed to turn his daughters into two of the most important athletes of all time who would end up changing tennis as it was known at the time.

Belfast

Kenneth Branagh directs this Irish film that portrays the conflict in Belfast, in Northern Ireland (during the 1960s) from the perspective of a child in his childhood. Jude Hill makes his film debut in the role of Buddy alongside actors Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds and Colin Morgan, who give life to the most important people in this small world under their innocent perspective: their family. It is available for viewing on Mubi.

The alley of lost souls

Guillermo del Toro directs this new adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham's novel and leads a brilliant cast of Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen and David Strathairn. The story is set in New York in the 1940s and follows the swindler Stanton Carlisle, a carnival man who plans the perfect robbery of a millionaire. He receives the help of a psychiatrist, although she will have other intentions. It can be seen on Star+.

West Side Story

Two young people from different ethnic backgrounds fall in love in New York during the 1950s, a love story in the same style as Romeo and Juliet. The romance is framed by the confrontation between two street gangs that control the city, and they deal with different problems typical of the time. Originally, the story belongs to a Broadway classic. The film was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg and featured performances by Rachel Zegler (Maria), Ansel Elgort (Tony), Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernard), Mike Faist (Riff), Brian d'Arcy James (Officer Krupke), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chinese) and Rita Moreno (Valentina). The title recently hit the Disney+ catalog.

Drive my car

It follows the story of Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), an actor and theater director happily married to screenwriter Oto (Reika Kirishima). However, Oto suddenly dies after leaving behind a secret. Two years later, Kafuku, still unable to overcome the loss of his wife, receives an offer to direct a play at a theater festival and heads to Hiroshima in his car. There she meets Misaki (Toko Miura), who will become Kafuku's chauffeur. While spending time together, Kafuku faces the mystery of his wife who silently haunts him. The film is available on the MUBI platform. And she is undoubtedly the eastern representative and the most important novelty of this award that becomes more international every year.

Licorice Pizza, the new film by Paul Thomas Anderson, also nominated for the highest category at the 2022 Oscars, is currently showing in theaters.

This Sunday night, the Oscar ceremony can be experienced by the signal of TNT for all of Latin America.
