Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, a historical member of the left in Mexico, criticized the installation of the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group in the Congress of the Union and pointed out that a message is being given that contravenes the official Mexican political position regarding the invasion in Ukraine.

Through social networks, this Thursday, March 24, the former federal deputy for the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) commented on the demonstration of the legislators of the Lower House in favor of the installation of the Group, since the Mexican State strongly opposed the military incursion into Ukrainian territory.

In addition to this, the retiring politician highlighted the presence and closeness of the United States with Mexico, one of the nations that has applied economic sanctions on the Russian Federation following the armed incursion against Ukraine. In that regard, he presented a request from the former US president that encourages more armed conflicts.

And on Wednesday 23, the benches of Morena, the Labour Party (PT) and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) installed this mechanism of parliamentary diplomacy with the aim of establishing a peaceful link and mutual dialogue in which “a diplomatic agreement and a peaceful solution is promoted in which the parties put down their arms.”

We are here with the interest of installing this group in difficult times, of great controversy, but we want to insist that this is precisely a Friendship Group, and not in the interest of making conflicts,” said Alberto Anaya (PT), president of the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group.

On his own, Viktor Koronelli, Russian Ambassador to Mexico, thanked the invitation to the installation meeting of the Friendship Group, and said that the bilateral relationship with Mexico has a strategic character based on mutual respect for interests.

Like Muñoz Ledo and Lazo de la Vega, Ricardo Monreal, Morena's coordinator in the Senate of the Republic, pointed out that, although he respects the formation of this group, he does not agree with this type of legislative work being carried out. “In the Senate we are going to act wisely,” he said in a brief statement to the media.

“I don't think it's appropriate to form friendship groups of that nature,” he said. He added that what the Mexican State should do is focus on stopping the war, promoting humanitarian aid and protecting the displaced.

In addition to this, it should be recalled that the Citizen Movement (MC) bench in the Chamber of Deputies demonstrated on the outskirts of San Lázaro to condemn the materialization of the Friendship Group, which was branded as reckless and unnecessary.

The protest was led by Jorge Álvarez Máynez, MC coordinator in San Lazaro. In addition, he was accompanied by other legislators: Rocío Banquells, Elvia Martinez Cossío, Maria Alvarez, Amalia García (representative of the Citizen Movement in the Committee on Foreign Relations), Solomon Chertorivski (member of the Mexico-Ukraine Friendship Group), Manuel Herrera, Julieta Mejía and Irisay Rodríguez.

The dissenters said that, with the installation of this Friendship Group, an erroneous message is given by the Mexican State to the world, or at least contradictory to the official position, since Juan Ramón de la Fuente, representative of Mexico to the United Nations (UN), condemned the hostilities in Ukrainian territory on two occasions: once before the UN Security Council and the second before the Plenary of that organization. Similarly, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard have called for the construction of peace in Ukraine.
