Massacre in Celaya: what is known about the seven burned bodies found in a van

The disappearance of a group of musicians from the community of Juan Martín seems to be on the verge of confirming the worst, although the authorities have not given any further information about it

After the night of this Tuesday, March 22, a van with seven burned bodies was located in the south of Celaya, Guanajuato, the inhabitants have began to ask who the victims were and what the origin of the crime was. The disappearance of a group of musicians from the community of Juan Martín seems to be about to confirm the worst, although the authorities have not given any further information about it.

Tuesday night was the last time the members of the musical group “Los Chuparrecio” were seen. Since then, nothing has been heard from them again. Their relatives indicated that they were hired to attend an event in a nearby community that afternoon. They went there from three in the afternoon and were due to return around nine in the evening. The last contact they had with their loved ones was at 3:45 p.m.

It was also learned that a 15-year-old boy identified as Juan Diego, who had accompanied the musicians as his assistant, did not return home on Tuesday. Since then his relatives began looking for him and reported his disappearance to the authorities, activating the Amber alert by protocol. In total, there are six members and two companions who disappeared.

Unofficially it was noted that at least two of the musicians do correspond to the bodies found lifeless in the punt of a red Ford pickup truck, model 1987, with plates from the state of Michoacán. Both were reportedly recognized by a series of photographs that circulated on social networks and in which some characteristics (such as clothing) of the corpses found can be seen.

The musicians' relatives added that the van in which the bodies were found was not the same one in which they moved to attend the event. However, they confirmed that the vehicle they were carrying was found abandoned on the afternoon of this Wednesday 23rd in the Villas del Romeral neighborhood intact and without any instruments. Some relatives reported that the prosecution has not responded to them, despite the fact that they have already carried out DNA tests. “They sent us to do genetic tests, to make the complaint and that's it. They don't give us any more answers,” they told the newspaper Correo.

Celaya authorities received the report on Tuesday night, March 22, of a van burning in the community of San José el Nuevo to Rincón de Tamayo, located south of Celaya. When they arrived, shortly after 11:00 at night, and after putting out the fire, firefighters and policemen discovered that there were seven burned bodies in the punt of a van.

The executive secretary of the State Public Security System of the state, Sophia Huett López, reported that the van had a license plate of the state Michoacán and had a report of theft in that entity. In addition, he indicated that the victims of this crime have not yet been identified. “The Prosecutor's Office will have to review who these people were and where they came from. For now, there are no indications to determine that they were local people,” he said.

The state of Guanajuato, until 2021, was the state with the highest number of intentional homicides in the country after the end of the year with 3,516 victims of this crime. However, in the first two months of 2022 it fell to second place, with 477 cases, just below the state of Michoacán, which accumulated 484 murders.

In the case of the municipality of Celaya, in the first two months of the year, it ranked as the fifth most murdered Mexican city, with 71, which represents an increase of 24.5% compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Citizen Security and Protection of the Government of Mexico.
