Doctor ended up with a broken nose after being assaulted in a hospital in Antioquia

A new case of intolerance against health professionals occurred in the municipality of Rionegro, Antioquia. The doctor Michael Idárraga González reported that he was assaulted last Tuesday, March 22, by the father of a minor in the San Juan de Dios hospital.

In dialogue with the regional media 'Mi Oriente', Luis Carlos Mejía Quiceno, manager of the healthcare center, explained that the doctor was taking care of the 12-year-old boy in the emergency room, as there were chances that he would have to undergo surgery. Apparently, the father's intention was to take his son from the hospital, however, Idárraga González told him that he should wait for the urologist to arrive to evaluate the child before he was discharged.

This determination did not like the man, who ended up attacking the doctor, giving him several blows to the face. The assailant was intercepted by the guards of the medical institution, waiting for the arrival of the police, who carried out his arrest.

Dr. Idárraga suffered a broken nose and damage to one of his eyes, so he will have to undergo further examinations, according to the director of the San Juan de Dios hospital.

The events have generated concern among the authorities and various health sectors, since there are still several cases of aggression against health professionals. “We must recognize medical personnel, protected by all international laws and in all settings because they are there to protect life and to deal with the pain situations of all citizens,” said Jorge Rivas, Secretary of Health of Rionegro.

On Wednesday morning, the management of the San Juan de Dios hospital released a statement in which it expressed its rejection of the attacks against the health professional: “We know that the daily occupation situation that occurs in our services, especially in the Emergency Department, is of concern to users and their families, but also for doctors, professionals, specialists and assistants who attend to health needs”.

“Nothing justifies violence and that is why we call for tolerance, respect and self-control, remembering that at this time when the world is going through a pandemic and various difficult problems, we do not need to generate more acts of intolerance that lead to verbal and physical abuse of any person,” she added. missive.

For its part, the Association of Social Enterprises of the State of Antioquia (AESA) stated that this type of event “is unacceptable and goes against all the principles of benevolence that must surround health personnel.” In addition, he pointed out that the attacks occur amid the ignorance of the companions, which triggers in acts of intolerance.

In recent times, there has been a significant occupation in the health centers of Rionegro, so it is common for citizens to express their dissatisfaction with delays in care. This was stated by the local undersecretary of health, Felipe Puerta: “In our network we have had moments of congestion that prolong services, but this is not justification from any point of view for the aggression against these personnel.”

The case was brought to the attention of the Attorney General's Office, which will carry out the respective investigation.

The Sectional Secretariat of Health of Antioquia reported that this Wednesday, March 23, 29 new cases of covid-19 were presented: 25 in Medellín, and one in San Rafael, Sabaneta, Envigado and Rionegro.
