The 2022 Formula 1 season began and with it a new drama for Sergio Pérez, as the Mexican driver did not start his walk on the right foot and less than one lap before the end of the GP of Bahrain, said goodbye to the 13th podium of his career.
The reason for the debacle was a spin caused by a failure in the fuel system of his Red Bull RB18, which blocked his rear tires and prevented him from continuing the last stage of the race.
Because the incident occurred at the end of the main straight and in one of the most important overrun areas of the Sakhir circuit, the fans' cameras did not miss the moment and recorded the Checo Pérez incident, so another crucial angle of the spinning that Red Bull left without points.
This failure prevented his car from moving again and also meant the second abandonment for Red Bull in Bahrain, since three laps earlier Max Verstappen's car had similar complications that led to its departure when it was in second place place.
The highlight of the new video is the reaction of the fans, as cries of despair, sadness and courage were combined with those of joy over the rebase of Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes team, who sneaked onto the podium in a surprising way after a irregular weekend.
Checo had already defended the seven-time world champion in an extraordinary way and even some laps before had already reported a loss of power, so his defensive maneuvers increased, to the extent that several fans were already starting to boast the nickname he won at the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP: The Minister of Defense Mexican.
Those were some of Sergio Pérez's statements for Sky Sports after the incident, where he also stressed that the problem lay in the system that pumps the gasoline, something that was also confirmed by Red Bull Racing's chief adviser, Helmut Marko, who denied rumors that they ran out of gas in the tank.
“There was enough gas in the tanks of both cars. A vacuum in the supply system caused the engine to run out of fuel. I think we can solve the problem in Saudi Arabia over the weekend,” Marko said for F1 Insider.
When is Checo Pérez's next race?
Less than a week after the incident, the Mexican will already be able to test his RB18 at the Jeddah circuit, as the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will take place between March 25 and 27, with the race scheduled for this Sunday at 11 in the morning, in Mexico City time.
This race will be the second of 23 scheduled for 2022 in Formula 1, so there will be several competitions in which Red Bull and Max Verstappen will seek to redeem the hard hit they received in terms of reliability during the Bahrain Grand Prix.
