Last Monday holiday, a 15-year-old boy, identified as Juan Andrés Tamayo Grajales, died after being shot by his 18-year-old cousin from the municipality of Bello, Antioquia. The victim was taken to a hospital, but, due to the severity of the injuries, he lost his life.
According to the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Police, a call entered emergency line 123 indicating that a minor had been admitted to Marco Fidel Suárez hospital with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. The preliminary report indicated that he was with his relative in an apartment in the Obrero neighborhood when the misfortune occurred.
Authorities indicated that young people were apparently “playing” with this device and, from one moment to another, Juan Fernando Ramírez Tamayo was accidentally triggered against his cousin. The building's security staff helped to refer the young man to the health center, but, beyond the resuscitation attempts, there was no chance of saving him.
Upon arrival at the health center, the shooter explained that both had consumed hallucinogenic substances. Ramírez Tamayo was captured by the authorities pending clarification of the facts.
In other news from Bello, north of the Aburrá Valley metropolitan area, relief agencies continue to search for a young man who fell into the La Loca ravine. This is Juan Camilo Duque, 22, who was dragged by the tributary when he was riding a motorcycle with another person.
It should be remembered that the person with whom Juan Camilo Duque was mobilizing was rescued by the community, who realized what happened and joined efforts to try to prevent the ravine from taking both occupants of the motorcycle. Likewise, it is important to highlight that Juan Camilo Duque was as a barbecue man for the motorcycle involved in the event.
Homicides continue to be a subject on which the Antioquia authorities continue to work; however, in the first two months of the year the figures have been positive. A couple of weeks ago, Governor Aníbal Gaviria presented the balance sheet for January and February 2022, showing significant reductions.
In the first month, the decrease was 21.4% compared to the same period in 2021; and in the second, there was a 34% decrease. “This February is one of the months with the lowest homicide in the entire department in the last 30 years. Only 7 years ago we had a February with fewer homicides and the accumulated one from January to February shows us 106 lives saved,” said the official.
However, Gaviria also pointed out that there is particular concern in the subregions of the East, Middle Magdalena and Nordesde, since there were increases there so far in 2021. The governor urged the authorities to redouble their efforts, and thus, meet the goal of reducing violent deaths by 10.7 per cent throughout the year.
“The most complex issue continues to be presented to us in the Northeast, but there, with the support of the Ministry of Defence, the Army and the Police, we are redoubling our efforts. A police contingent has already arrived to reinforce the presence and also through the IV Brigade, the increase in joint police and army patrols has been arranged. And we are waiting for a deputy commander of the Antioquia Police, who will focus his efforts on the Northeast”, he concluded.
