Violence in Sonora: Shooting in Caborca left one dead and one injured

The perpetrators fled, leaving an abandoned van without license plates and a rifle.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 22, a shooting took place in which a person died in the colony of El Alto, Caborca.

According to a statement issued by the Attorney General's Office of the State of Sonora (FGJE), it is believed that the events stemmed from drug trafficking problems in the area, since the attack was directly against one person and was recorded from two vehicles.

The expert staff of the FGJE processed the areas where three cars were located and the lifeless man, who was monitored by elements of the State Security Board.

The events took place on 13 de Julio and 27 de Agosto streets. The Municipal Police found two automotive units, in one of them, a gray Volkswagen, a man was found without life. In the second, white, another injured 20-year-old man was found, who was helped by members of the Red Cross and taken to a hospital.

The third vehicle was located by officers of the State Public Security Police on José María Morelos and Arturo Franco Ulloa Street, in the Las Granjas neighborhood.

According to investigations by authorities through Field Crime, Forensic Ballistics and other areas, it was established that the occupants of a Jeep Cherokee and a Chevrolet Traverse attacked a Volkswagen GTI car.

In the latter, the 26-year-old victim, Luis Enrique, was traveling. According to the authorities' first reports, no evidence was found of firearms or gunfire coming from inside Luis Enrique's vehicle.

While the other man, identified as José Alonso “N”, was found in the white Jeep Cherokee.

Authorities also found inside Chevrolet Traverse metal spikes rims, hammered casings, a bag with weed inside with marijuana characteristics and an apparently damaged rifle weapon. Likewise, the vehicle had impacts from firearm shells. The vehicle was abandoned.

On the other hand, the ballistic trace was determined on the other two vehicles, the Jeep and the Chevrolet, which came from the inside to the outside. The shots hit the front of the Volkswagen and the rear of the body and on the windows.

In recent days violence has been unleashed in the state of Sonora, especially in the municipality of Caborca, whose inhabitants have experienced worrying moments due to clashes between criminal groups.

Only last March 19, in different cases, three people were killed, two in the Niños Héroes neighborhood, between Las Torres Boulevard and Martyrs Avenue, north of the demarcation, while the location of the third fatal victim was not specified by the FGJE.

The first two were executed around 1:00 p.m., one of them was performing maintenance to local police units and was accompanied by a relative of his while they were moving in a white pick-up truck, who were identified as Erik Antonio Gaxiola Pinedo, 31, and his uncle Carlos Gaxiola, 50, who was going as a co-pilot.

It should also be noted that on March 12, a shooting was recorded around 4:00 p.m. orchestrated by alleged hit men from a criminal cell operating in Caborca, who attacked the unit in which 34-year-old Obed Duviel was traveling, originally from Culiacán, Sinaloa, who received medical attention.

The man was arrested for his participation in the armed confrontation and 5 rifles were secured to him.

In the same events, another of those involved stripped a white van from another driver to escape. However, the operation deployed with the support of the police, the National Guard and the Army, made it possible to recover the Toyota RAV4, 2016 model with Sonora license plates, a couple of hours later and returned to its owners.

In addition, at the beginning of March there were several clashes between criminal groups in the area, where soldiers came to repel the attack, which resulted in two suspected gunmen killed, two arrested, five vehicles and long guns secured, one military casualty and four uniformed personnel injured.
