In the world of numismatics, dozens of collectors find themselves every day searching for a new piece for their catalogue of “miniature works of art”. However, some people sell various tickets at stratospheric prices, such is the case of a copy that is offered online at a very high cost.

This is the award-winning paper money, due to its design and which was put into circulation last year. This time it is quoted at up to 200 thousand pesos, due to an alleged printing error.

Next, we will disclose the characteristics of the piece and where the alleged error is displayed, according to a person who put the copy up for sale through a commercial internet platform.

What is the ticket?

With predominantly green and red colors, and being the first Mexican banknote in mixed format (horizontal front and vertical back), the piece we refer to was printed by the Bicentennial of Mexico's Independence.

Its face value is 20 pesos and it was awarded under the category of “Best Commemorative 2021 ″ at High Security Printing (HSP).

Where is the error displayed?

According to a person who shared the image of the 20-peso banknote on the Mercado Libre website, the alleged error was detected on the date of printing, since it needs a number at the end of the year, as it says “202″.

According to the Banco de México (Banxico), this banknote was put into circulation as of September 24, 2021.

The Banxico announced that the material with which this piece was created is polymer. In addition, it is part of the G family, that is, one of the most current ones issued by Banxico, so it is still valid for transactions in the country.

On its obverse was the triumphal entry of the Army of the Three Guarantees into Mexico City. While the reverse side shows the mangrove ecosystem with its representative fauna and flora, in a site recognized in the “World Heritage” list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as an example of the natural wealth that is distributed throughout the country.

The copy is displayed on the Mercado Libre page for up to 200 thousand pesos. Although there are other users who offer the same piece, without error and up to 300 thousand pesos.

Banknotes of various denominations are sold on the same trading platform at extraordinary prices, such as some copies of the G family.

Although experts and collectors have claimed that they are not worth it, people continue to share the pieces on an internet platform at stratospheric costs.

In a recent interview with a Mexican collector, he even said that the prices that various people place on the internet are “ridiculous” to him.

“They are speculators, they give ridiculous values to banknotes that don't have them. It's one thing to try to sell a ticket for its peculiar serial number, at a price perhaps twice its value, but trying huge prices is ridiculous. Sadly people fall,” he shared to the media outlet.

At least five copies are offered between 20,000 pesos to 500,000 pesos, according to some people who shared the photos to sell them in Mercado Libre.
