Deputy Petista Gerardo Fernández Noroña welcomed the fact that the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) declared Lake Texcoco a Natural Protected Area (ANP) and lashed out against the opposition, assuring that this sector supported the initiative to build the New International Airport of the Mexico City (NAICM), a project that was promoted by PRI artist Enrique Peña Nieto.
In this regard, the activist of the Labour Party (PT) wrote the following message on his Twitter account: “Another nail in the opposition coffin, today Lake Texcoco was determined as a protected natural area. True, those who call themselves protectors of nature wanted to build an airport on what was Lake Texcoco.”
The legislator's ironic comment came after the announcement made by María Luisa Albores González, who reported on the details of the declaration published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), which stipulated that the area comprises 14,000 hectares of which almost 10,660 are in the federal zone, 2,971 are of ejido tenure and 379 of other types as private property.
The announcement of the addition of Lake Texcoco to the list of Protected Natural Areas came after the recent inauguration of Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), one of the flagship mega-works promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and within the framework of World Water Day.
According to Albores González, thanks to this decree, more than 678 species of flora and fauna will be cared for, including some of the most representative species of the Valley of Mexico basin. In addition, the shelter will be protected for the more than 150 thousand specimens of migratory birds that arrive in winter.
The ANP decree will also allow activities in the area such as ecotourism, ecological restoration, reforestation with native species, agriculture and livestock oriented to sustainability and utilization through Wildlife Conservation Management Units (UMAs).
For his part, Iñaki Echeverría, in charge of the Lago de Texcoco Ecological Park, said that the 14,000 hectares will be protected with an investment of 4,566 million pesos, thus benefiting from directly to a total population of 12.5 million inhabitants.
After the inauguration of the new Santa Lucia airport and prior to its commencement of operations, Fernández Noroña has more than responded to those who have criticized the Tabasco project, including Felipe Calderón Hinojosa and the deputy for Va por Mexico, Margarita Zavala Gómez del Campo, who recently stated in an opinion piece that AIFA is the “most expensive airport in the world”. Faced with this situation, the petista ironized on social networks about the Bicentenario refinery, which was supposed to be built in Hidalgo.
In this regard, the deputy recalled the work that would supposedly be built during the six-year period in which Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, the leader of the National Action Party (PAN), was governed. However, the project that promised employees and business opportunities for residents was not carried out and, instead, a fence was erected to enclose the 700 hectares that would be occupied by the refinery.
In addition to the deputy of the PT, another of the characters who spoke out against Calderón Hinojosa for the refinery that was left unfinished, is the journalist and producer Epigmenio Ibarra, who recently claimed that the former president allegedly spent 1.8 billion pesos on the construction of the fence.
