According to figures offered in 2021 by the National Alliance for Road Safety (Anasevi), in Mexico there have been an average of 378,504 traffic accidents every year since 2015, of which 16,000 people were killed, about 44 fatalities per day. Four out of every 10 deaths in the country are pedestrians; in addition, seven out of 10 are vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists).
“This figure is not the most alarming thing, the alarming thing is that annually more than 170,000 Mexicans are severely injured and that the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions estimates that every day in the country there are more than 14,000 traffic events, many of them causing serious injuries, hospitalizations. They are the second cause of orphanhood,” said Arturo Cervantes Trejo, president of the association at the time.
