Source AP: Agreement will keep automatic corridor in force

Automatic racers will continue to be placed on the trails during the extra innings, for the third consecutive season.

Despite the easing of restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the Major Leagues and the baseball union reached a tentative agreement to keep this controversial rule in place, according to which, every team that goes to bat starts with a runner at second base during the extra innings.

The rule will remain in effect for at least the entire 2022 season.

The agreement requires the approval of the owners of the teams of the majors, something that could come next week, said a person close to the agreement on Tuesday, who asked to remain anonymous because an announcement about it had not been authorized.

The New York Post newspaper was the first media to report on the agreement.

In addition, the agreement on changes to the rules of the game includes the extension of active payrolls, from 26 to 28 players from April 7 to May 1, due to the postponed start of the preseason.

Another new rule would benefit Shohei Ohtani, the star of the Angels who shines both on the mound and with the bat. The amendment is submitted to the adoption of the designated hitter rule in both leagues.

Now, pitchers who open games in the batting order can continue in them as designated hitter even if they are relieved on the hill. Also, a designated hitter can enter a game to throw.

The change will apply to several seasons.

The modification on the automatic corridor was applied since the regular campaigns of 2020 and 21, as part of the Operations Manual that included the procedures for dealing with COVID-19.

The change did not apply to the postseasons in either of those two years.

There were 78 games that were defined in extra innings during the 2020 campaign, shortened by the pandemic. The longest in innings were a pair of 13-inning matches in Houston, won by the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 29 and Oakland on August 7.

In every previous season since 1901, at least one game of 15 innings or longer had been recorded.

There were 233 games of extra innings last year. The longest was a Los Angeles Dodgers win at the San Diego Padres house on August 25, in 16 episodes.

The modification for 2020 and 21 that shortened the doubles to seven-inning matches, will not continue for 2022.

The roster of active players will be 28 from opening day to May 1. They will be reduced to 26 from May 2 to August 31 and will be expanded to 28 in the rest of the regular season.

Last year, the limit was 26 from the opening game to August 31, before the expansion to 28.
