SEP has more than 104,000 teachers without university studies: Education with Rumbo

Patricia Ganem stressed that if the 83,323 teachers who were 60 or older in 2021 accessed their pension system, there would be enough places to renew teacher profiles

In Mexico, only 8.5% of teachers who teach in basic education have maximum high school education, warned the spokeswoman for the civil organization Education with Rumbo (ECR), Patricia Ganem, who indicated that if these teachers left there would be 104,153 places for better-prepared people.

During a press conference, the researcher called it inadmissible for the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) to leave teachers with that level of study in front of a group, which also puts the education system at a disadvantage.

Patricia Ganem also stressed that if the 83,323 teachers who were 60 or older in 2021 accessed their pension system, there would be enough places to renew teacher profiles.

Not counting, he added, to the 5,418 education workers who died of COVID-19, according to data from the Epidemiological and Statistical Subsystem of Deaths (SEED) of the General Directorate of Health Information.

There are places available and that are not being reported to meet the urgent needs of education, to equip basic education with a greater number of teachers, since the basic level remains the one with the greatest number of students and therefore teachers, however, the number of students will shift as the time,” he said.

The spokeswoman for the organization also denounced the lack of transparency in the availability of places for teachers, which, she said, encourages their sale and a lower level of learning in the classroom.

Patricia Ganem explained that since 2020, the organization has detected that the states do not report it the vacancies available in the Teachers Career System Unit (USICAMM), the body responsible for promoting among teachers the process that allows them to access places.

He reported that next August 8 will be published the results of admission of teachers for basic education; while for the promotion of principal and supervisor of basic and upper secondary education the dates are 11 and 25 June, respectively.

“We will be very attentive to the public exercise that each entity must carry out for the allocation of places to avoid continuing to do business with the places that, by right, belong to teachers who have prepared and demonstrate with results that they are worthy of being in front of the group,” he said.

SEP announced that the new basic education curricula and programs will encourage teachers to enjoy curricular autonomy (Photo: Karina Hernández/Infobae)

It should be recalled that on March 7, the Undersecretary of Higher Education, Luciano Concheiro Bórquez, announced that the new basic education curricula and programs will encourage teachers to enjoy curricular autonomy in order to contextualize the contents from their knowledge.

During the assembly to analyze the curriculum and curricula for the design of the Free Textbooks for Basic Education, the public servant said that the transformation of education cannot take place without the rich participation of teachers “which has demanded for decades to be listened to and taken into account”.

For his part, the general director of Educational Materials, Marx Arriaga Navarro, assured that now disciplinary knowledge will not be pre-written by external specialists, nor will it be the only knowledge option that children will have, but will be the option of deepening their particular ways of life.
