NEW YORK (AP) — In his first show since 2019, Ralph Lauren transformed a long hall of the Museum of Modern Art into a cozy room on Tuesday night to present a wealthy collection, mostly in black and white, for men and women.
Their models, including Gigi and Bella Hadid, wandered among the guests sitting on black sofas and armchairs with classic white trousers and jackets, cocktail outfits and sequin-tight evening dresses. There were touches of black leather, striped fabrics and red and black plaid, with a dash of riding clothes and nordic fabrics inspired by skiing.
The opulent presentation of its autumn/winter women's collection, a luxury line, and its latest product for the luxury men's brand Purple Label was conceived months before the war broke out in Ukraine, Lauren said in her notes. At that time, he said, “the tragedy and devastation we are witnessing now was unthinkable.”
Dressed as cocktails, guests sipped champagne and nibbled on hors d'oeuvres while personalities such as Jessica Chastain, Henry Golding, Janelle Monáe, Mayor Eric Adams (wearing a hand-painted coat) and others were photographed by an unusually small contingent of photographers.
Monáe performed the last time Lauren performed in September 2019 during New York Fashion Week, turning a Wall Street space into a jazzy nightclub of yesteryear. This time, she skipped the frantic fashion week in February and went off the calendar. He had an intimate meeting in mind after his pandemic break, and for that he reduced the crowd and sought a relaxed atmosphere amid coffee tables decorated with stacked books and art objects.
“This moment means a lot to me because it also marks my return to New York. I haven't been to New York since the last show, so it's an honor to be here again,” said Monáe, who this time only attended as a guest and not singing, to The Associated Press.
Gigi opened the show with black pants and a black V-neck sweater adorned with the “RL” logo on a white button. His sister walked in a white evening dress fitted to the body with a cut on the neck and back.
A black evening dress was adorned at the hem with the New York City skyline in silver. Many models wore black and white “spectator” shoes, in the style of F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Jazzera.
Golding was also present at Lauren's 2019 show. “It's good to see people's faces, as if the world is moving forward, and I think it's about time,” he told the PA.
Adams, mayor since January, wore a black coat with a yellow panel on one side painted with African masks, a miniature of himself and a small city street sign.
“This is the locker room of the new mayor of New York,” he said jokingly. “Our city is back. This is the capital of fashion.”
At the end of the show, after the final walk of her models, 82-year-old Lauren came out to say hello, taking a moment to take it all in.
“So, in the midst of this sadness, we continue to move forward united in our hope for peace, and our hope for the end of this pandemic and of getting back together,” he said in his notes. “I am very proud to be with you again sharing not just a collection, but an optimism to live respecting the dignity of all.”
