This Sunday the 94th edition of the Oscars will be held. The ceremony is organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Initially, the ceremony was scheduled for February 27, however, due to the increase in cases of COVID-19 that occurred at the beginning of the year, it was decided to postpone it until this month.

The first ceremony took place on May 16, 1929 at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles and was held in order to recognize the cinematographic achievements made in the years 1927 to 1928. In addition, for the first award, the winners had already been announced three months earlier, so it was no surprise for them to return home with the golden statuette.

On the occasion of this Sunday's awards and to get more into the atmosphere of the Oscars, in the following article we will tell you who was the first woman nominated for the “Best Actress” award.

FIRST WINNER FOR “BEST ACTRESS”

Actress Janet Gaynor was the first woman to be awarded “Best Actress” during the first Oscar Awards ceremony held on May 16, 1929. Gaynor achieved this recognition thanks to the films The Seventh Heaven (1927), Dawn (1927) and The Angel of the Street (1928). The other nominees for that year's major award were Louise Dresser for the film A ship is coming and Gloria Swanson for The Fragile Will.

Before, the eligibility period was two years, so the different projects in which he had appeared during that time were evaluated, which is why Gaynor was considered his participation in all three films. This changed from the seventh ceremony when the eligibility period began to be the year immediately before.

Janet Gaynor is considered one of the greatest film stars of the late silent and early days of sound cinema. In 1937 she was again nominated for the award for her role in the film A Star Is Born. However, that year German actress Luise Rainer won recognition for the film The Great Ziegfeld.
