The governor of Sonora, Alfredo Durazo, announced that the local prosecutor's office captured one of those responsible for the attack on the Guaymas Municipal Palace on November 25, which sought to shoot down the then security officer, but resulted in the murder of activist Marisol Cuadras.
Through his Twitter account, the governor assured that the individual was captured last Tuesday, March 22 by the Attorney General's Office of State (FGJE):
“Yesterday, the Attorney General's Office of the State arrested one of the material and intellectual authors of the events that occurred in Guaymas last November,” the president published on March 23.
In the same way, he assured that the security table, made up of state and federal authorities, have committed themselves to “meeting those responsible and strengthening our actions to return peace of mind to our state and ensure the safety of Sonorans”.
The president did not elaborate on the identity of the detainee, the circumstances in which the operation was carried out or the status of the investigations into the case, as it is expected that the FGJE will communicate the details.
The arrest of the person suspected of the attack was made weeks after the head of the prosecution, Claudia Indira Contreras Córdova, announced the progress of the investigations more than three months after the incident.
Claudia Indira indicated that six were involved in the armed attack, a hit man identified as Carlos Alberto Mejía Grijalva, El Plebeyo, who was killed by security forces who responded to the attack; Ivan Alejandro, El Taliban, killed on January 17 in the municipality of hermosillo, Sonora.
Another accomplice identified as Julián Alejandro, El Güerito, was also killed in the state, as he lost his life to armed men in the municipality of Empalme on January 5 of last year.
The identities of the two fugitives and the subject arrested on March 22 are still kept anonymous by the authorities in order not to obstruct the corresponding investigations for the case.
It was also announced that the bullets that hit activist Marisol Cuadras were diverted by a pillar, since neither of the two parties that participated in the confrontation fired their firearms to the place where the young woman was.
The attack on Humberto Cano Ahuir, then municipal security commissioner, claimed the life of Antelmo Eduardo, the escort of Mayor Karla Córdova, who was guarding her at the time of the attack.
According to the state authorities, 14 probable persons involved in the violent act have already been arrested, while several arrest warrants have been issued and are expected to be completed in order to deepen the investigations.
The FGE assured that the tragedy of November 25 could have been greater, since an explosive device did not work as expected by the attackers, causing less damage than expected.
“When it was not fully armed, it did not explode and caused the damage it would have caused if it had been launched, obviously without that fear on the part of the criminals, the extension it would have covered is more than five meters in circumference around,” said Indira Contreras.
