The Australian Ben O'Connor (AG2R) is the new leader of the Vuelta a Catalunya, after winning this Wednesday alone the third stage between the French town of Perpignan and the La Molina ski resort. Nairo Quintana and Sergio Higuita were the best Colombians in this fraction.

O'Connor, fourth in the last Tour de France, beat Spaniard Juan Ayuso (UAE), who came second in the finish line and Colombian Nairo Quintana (Arkea), who finished third, entering the rest of the favorites after 161 km.

The Australian placed first overall, overriding Norway's Jonas Hvideberg, who had worn the leader's jersey on Tuesday after collecting bonuses in the second stage. Behind O'Connor in the general standings are Ayuso ten seconds away and Nairo Quintana at 12.

The stage was played on the demanding 12km climb to the finish line of La Molina with an average height difference of 4.5% when O'Connor surprised the peloton eight kilometers to go.
