Kurds lament “inaction” to the Islamic State in Syria

Three years after the territorial defeat of the Islamic State (IS) group, the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) warned the international community on Wednesday about the consequences of “inaction” in the face of attempts to expand IS in Syria and Iraq.

“The inaction of the international community, the fact that some countries have turned their backs on this issue constitutes an opportunity for IS to strengthen itself,” the SDF said in a statement.

At the forefront of the fight against the jihadist group, the SDF, supported by the international coalition, announced on 23 March 2019 the fall of IS in Syria by expelling it from its last fiefdom of Baghuz, in the province of Deir Ezzor (east).

At the end of January, the jihadist group carried out a deadly attack — the most important since its defeat — against a prison controlled by the SDF in the Al Hasaka region (northeast).

But in early February, the United States eliminated the former IS chief during an operation in northwestern Syria.

The jihadist group is trying to rekindle its dreams and to control some regions of Syria and Iraq, in order to create greater danger to the population,” adds the SDF statement, noting that ISIS is also seeking to attract new recruits.
