India: 11 dead, 4 injured in warehouse fire

HYDERABAD, India (AP) — At least 11 people were killed and four injured Wednesday in a large fire at a junkyard in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, according to police and officials.

Fifteen workers were sleeping in the establishment when a short circuit caused the fire, which trapped people inside. The workers were from the eastern state of Bihar and had traveled to Hyderabad to seek employment.

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, chief minister of the state of Telangana, of which Hyderabad is the capital, expressed his condolences and ordered that financial compensation be given for the deceased.

Fires are common in India, where builders and residents often ignore urban planning laws and safety regulations.
