Thanks to the Ecoenergy Project promoted by the Public Service Lighting Company of Pasto (Sepal), which emerged in 2018 following a call by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Colciencias), a pair of solar panels were installed in the parks of the Santa Monica and Tamasagra neighborhoods.
The aim of this project is to evolve the conventional mechanisms of public lighting in the city with renewable energies that make it possible to reduce costs and contribute to the care of the environment.
The Santa Monica and Tamasagra neighborhoods are role models in Pasto in preserving and caring for the environment. For this reason, they were chosen for the implementation of solar panels, according to statements by Cristian Delgado Guerrero, Sepal's ICT manager.
The configuration of the installed network will allow the energy stored in the panels from sunlight to be available throughout the power grid. In this vein, not only will the inhabitants save on energy consumption, but it will contribute to the entire electricity system of the sector.
Solar panels generate 1,581.16 kilowatts per hour, which allows annual energy savings of around $40 billion pesos. In addition, this system contributes to the significant reduction of CO2, as well as a positive economic and social impact.
Similarly, Jorge Estacio Ramos, technical and operational director of Sepal, said that work is already being done to replace public lighting with LED lights that reduce greenhouse gas by 70 percent.
Last year, the National Government confirmed that more than $300 million pesos will be invested in solar energy in the country. Initially, with this project promoted by Klarzen Green Technology Inc, it seeks to generate 1,068 jobs and contribute to the annual reduction of 23,660 tons of CO2, equivalent to 76,632 planted trees.
The project will see the green light from the second half of this year under a 10-year energy sales contract (PPA) and valid until 2032. In this way, Klarzen Green Technology Inc, managed to invest US$37.3 million in Colombia from its headquarters in the United States for the installation of 66,666 solar panels.
