(Bloomberg) One third of European nations, including Germany, France and the United Kingdom, are experiencing an increase in cases of covid-19 after a “brutal” relaxation of restrictions, said the regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO).

“The countries where we see a particular increase are the United Kingdom, Ireland, Greece, Cyprus, France, Italy and Germany,” Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said Tuesday at a briefing in Moldova. “Those countries are brutally lifting restrictions, from too many to too few.”

Europe is trying to leave covid-19 behind, but the rush to lift restrictions is now paving the way for a resurgence of pandemic risks. Newly confirmed cases increased to 5.4 million in the past seven days, up from 4.9 million at the end of February, according to WHO data. More than 12,400 people died from covid last week, the WHO said.

However, Kluge said he is “optimistic and alert” about the pandemic in Europe because many people have developed immunity through vaccines, winter is coming to an end and omicron is a milder variant than the previous ones. However, in countries with low vaccination rates, it is still a disease that kills people, he said.

“As for the prognosis, it's hard to tell, because this virus has surprised us many times,” Kluge said.
