Cases of theft continue to rise in Medellín: in broad daylight and without any modesty they assault in the capital of Antioquia

The most recent, in broad daylight, a thief without help commits the crime in a matter of seconds, keeps the stolen thing in his pockets and goes on his way in the sight of other drivers.

The crime was recorded on video, where it is seen how a man on a motorcycle threatens a vehicle with a firearm, taking advantage of the trancón of the La Iguana sector, west of the capital of the department of Antioquia.

The video published by Noticias Antioquia, is one of the many cases that are experienced daily in the city of “la eterna primavera”. A few hours ago, a man was robbed in the Laureles neighborhood, when he was passing through a commercial sector. The thief was also caught on security cameras.

According to figures provided by El Colombiano, so far in 2022 there are 6 thefts that ended with the murder of the victim. In the metropolitan area, this crime has increased by 15.95%.

Citizens are not “saved” even in the sectors where they are considered “safe”, in the pink zone of the town, criminals entered a hotel that entered the dining room and assaulted several people, then left the place and escaped in the company of an alleged accomplice.

The perception of insecurity goes beyond what is said in the media or what is seen on social networks. There is a general increase in the form of theft of persons in the Aburrá Valley. According to the Metropolitan Police, 5,399 cases were registered in 2022, compared to the same time in 2021 there were 4,538. It means that 861 more facts have been submitted, for an increase of 15.95%.

Of 10 municipalities close to Medellin, eight reflect this increase. In Copacabana it is 74%, still Barbosa, with 47%; and La Estrella, 43%. The figures are estimated by the allegations brought about by these events. In Medellín, the increase is 20%, going from 3,412 incidents to 4,111; in Bello, the increase is 19%; Sabaneta, 14%; Itagüí, 10%; and in Envigado 1%.

These crimes show that they are increasingly violent, weapons are more lethal and several are being reported to end with the murder of the victims. Experts accuse these increases to institutional weakness, and security policy is not clear. They add that the regulation of the State is passive.

In addition, citizens are alarmed that some of these events end up affecting several people, since they are involved because they are in close proximity or being in the middle of the events, a few days ago she became known through a video, as a desperate girl seeks help while robbing the man who took care of her in a kindergarten.

The authorities have carried out a series of operations to timely capture these criminals, who already have criminal structures in place. For this, this Wednesday the Secretariat of Security and Coexistence of Medellín delivered 100 motorcycles and 15 vans to strengthen the action of the authorities against crime.

“These vehicles will be intended for immediate operation against high-impact crimes such as theft and homicide. In addition, they are equipped with the technological features of the latest models and those added for the purposes of the police service, such as GPS and beacons,” said the municipal body.

For his part, the commander of the Metropolitan Police of Medellín, Brigadier General Javier Josué Martín Gámez, thanked the Secretariat for the delivery of the motorcycles and vans: “” on behalf of all the police men and women who guarantee the safety and coexistence of Medellín, a thank you to the Mayor's Office. The delivery of this vehicle fleet shows more of an effective articulation against common and organized crime in the country.”
