President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that part of the advertising budget will be sought to pay a “kind of premium” and thereby guarantee social security for journalists who do not have it, this during his morning conference on March 23. It should be added that his government is currently facing a high rate of murdered and violated journalists.
In the three months of 2022 alone, the country recorded eight violent deaths of journalists, high levels of insecurity have led the republic to be considered the most dangerous region to carry out such work.
Faced with this, the union has asked the federal government to strengthen measures and mechanisms that address the problems that exist within the exercise of freedom of expression. In response, the president proposed this draft
“We are seeing how social security can be guaranteed to journalists by allocating a part of the government's advertising budget, it's not much anymore, but if we can afford to pay a kind of premium, a kind of fee, for journalists who don't have social security, (...) we will soon give it to to know, because we are going to allocate part of the budget item”, he commented from the National Palace and added that the support would be focused on independent journalists.
