After the tragic traffic accident of a school bus where, according to authorities, 6 children died and 15 more were injured, in the municipality of San Andrés (Santander), the minors' families were waiting for new medical reports and were also waiting for a helicopter to arrive in the area to transport the most serious ones.

Governor Mauricio Aguilar arrived there, who indicated that, according to preliminary information, there is the first hypothesis that a possible mechanical failure in the car caused the road accident.

“The first inquiries are that in those two kilometers that this school transport vehicle had traveled, apparently there was a mishap, it went out, but we are in the area of investigation. We hope that the competent authorities will deal with the case,” explained the local president.

Precisely, the National Police arranged a specialized group, led by the director of the Traffic Section, General Juan Alberto Libreros, with whom it is expected to establish the causes that triggered the car to roll 300 meters through an abyss in the Alto de San Pedro sector.

“On the instructions of our director, General Jorge Luis Vargas, I meet with an expert group from the Criminal Investigation Section of the Directorate of Traffic and Transport that specializes in the reconstruction of accidents in order to determine the causes of this regrettable event. The National Police extends condolences and regrets to relatives for this regrettable loss,” said the senior official.

Meanwhile, in the regional newspaper Vanguardia they spoke with some of the parents who were waiting for new medical reports of the injured minors.

“There are many children injured, many children beaten, it has been a great tragedy. For the parents of the deceased what pain, what sadness, what calamity. We ask the Santandereans and the authorities to help us,” Daniel Hernández, one of the parents, said in the Santanderean newspaper, who added that work has been very slow to attend to the students.

Other respondents asked for solidarity from Colombians because complex treatments are possible for the injured.

“I ask for the collaboration of people for the exams and for what we will need, also for the parents of the deceased and other injured children,” Edy Castellanos, mother of two injured minors, said at Vanguardia.

For this tragedy, President Iván Duque spoke out on his official Twitter account and expressed his condolences: “It hurts us deeply that minors have lost their lives after the accident that suffered a school route in the municipality of San Andrés, Santander.”

The affected students belong to the La Laguna de Ortices Institute and this was the first day that the school route service was provided to students. Some time after the events occurred, the authorities and relief agencies arrived to transfer the wounded.

In fact, given the seriousness of the accident, the municipality's fire commander, Andrés Orduz, asked for even a helicopter to transfer the four most seriously injured to health centers located in Bucaramanga and 11 other municipalities in Malaga.
