This March 22, 2022 marks World Water Day, marking 20 years since the United Nations conference on the environment, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, established this date with the intention of raising awareness about this resource, but above all to remember its importance for life.
Colombia in particular could be considered one of the richest countries in water, ranking 9th in the world with the most water. This is thanks to the favorable geography for this type of situation, specifically because it has a scarce ecosystem in the world such as the moors.
There is a large part of the water catchment, as happens in Bogotá and several populations in Colombia that benefit from this. Even so, one of the greatest protagonists when it comes to putting water at risk is precisely human activity.
Bad practices at the livestock level and poor disposal of waste and waste, in addition to unawareness in daily use and global warming, have made the ability to distribute liquid to the entire population of planet Earth increasingly worrying.
Even so, there are tasks that are carried out every day in search of their care and protection. Despite the fact that, according to a study by the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies in 2020, presented by the World Bank, there are already nearly 400 municipalities in Colombia at risk of water shortages.
Causes such as pollution and population growth have meant that water reaches fewer and fewer people, but above all, that it reaches more parts of the planet.
Colombia has had an increase in problems related to water scarcity, given that in some areas extreme levels of pollution have been reached, which makes it excessively toxic, even on contact.
As there is less and less drinking water, other risk areas are entered in other areas such as food supply, since crops will not have enough water to harvest, in addition to the fact that animals will not have water quality to hydrate themselves or rural life will gradually imply emigration around the vital liquid.
On this day, the Aqueduct and Sewerage Company of Bogotá will hold a forum called “We are water”, in which three central axes on water will be discussed among experts: Water security is environmental protection, Water security is modernization and Water security as a citizen culture.
The forum will be broadcast to the public through the EAAB profile where a live event will be held to engage citizens. The meeting will be held at 6:00pm, several experts will be sharing the most up-to-date information on water protection and the different mechanisms they use to guarantee water to citizens in the future.
As always, the invitation is to take good care of the water used in the different spaces, including: recycling, taking short baths, using what is necessary, taking care of the pipes in homes where there are possible leaks, among others.
