It's no secret that PSG is one of the most economically powerful clubs in the world and that's why it can afford to have three of today's most valuable players among its ranks. The level of football on the playing field must have its correlate in the salary level and that was exposed after the report presented by the French newspaper L'Equipe on its cover this Tuesday.
The newspaper released the full list of salaries of footballers who play in Ligue 1, the first division tournament in that country. Neymar is at the top of the table, but Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé accompany him on the podium.
Although the Parisian board made a fruitful contract with the Rosario player, the Argentine was far from perceiving what he was winning in Barcelona and it is not the best payout of his club either. The man who won the Golden Ball seven times did not receive a bonus for his signing as did most of the footballers who arrived at PSG, but in return he benefited from a “loyalty bonus” — he will receive it only after the pass market if he continues to stay at the club — of about 15 million euros added to the “net remuneration” of 25 million per season.
Leo, who signed for two more years an optional third, would have received one million euros from the PSG Fan Tokens. The whole business was already profitable for the institution: PSG closed “the most lucrative sponsorship” with a leading firm in the cryptocurrency business following Messi's arrival and also added multiple trade agreements following the figure of the Argentine.
However, the rosarino is not the best payout on the squad. This position is reserved for Neymar, the one chosen in 2017 to be the emblem of the Parisian entity and who in May 2021 renewed his contract until 2025 with an optional “almost automatic” year. The Brazilian star charges 30 million euros net per year, although the figure would decrease over the years as he nears the end of his bond. It should be noted that these salaries do not take into account collective bonuses for objectives. The third ranking of the club, and also in the Ligue, goes to Mbappé with about 2,220,000 euros per month gross.
With regard to salaries in general in Ligue 1, you have to stand at the 15th step of the table to find the first footballer who does not belong to the capital's squad. In that position is the French striker Wissam Ben Yedder (Monaco) with a monthly salary of 650,000 euros. What's more, in the entire Top 30 of the highest contracts of the tournament there are only 8 players who do not belong to the capital's club and only 2 are among the top 20.
As for the highest paid coaches in the league, PSG also took first place by disbursing 1.1 billion euros per month for Mauricio Pochettino. Well below him is another Argentinean: Jorge Sampaoli, from Marseille with 330 thousand euros per month. The podium is completed by Niza coach Christophe Galtier with the same amount as the former coach of the Argentine national team.
The media that published the detailed also shared the growth of the entire Ligue 1 salary stock from the 2018/19 season to the current season: it went from 1,380 million euros to 1,730 million euros. There was also a significant impact in the same period on PSG, which jumped from 370 million euros to 629 million euros.
