Within hours of the definition of the South American and European Qualifiers, Argentina and Italy already have a date, time and venue to face for the intercontinental cup that they will compete for having been the last champions of the Copa America and the Euro Cup, respectively. While Albiceleste has already secured its ticket to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Azzurra is still waiting for its passage, which it will look for in the playoff against Macedonia this Thursday.

UEFA confirmed that the Wembley Stadium, with capacity for 86,000 spectators, will be the setting for the so-called “Finalissima”, which will emulate the remembered 1993 Artemio Franchi Cup that took place in Mar del Plata between the champions of the 91 Copa America (Argentina) and Euro 92 (Denmark). This intercontinental of countries also took place for the first time in 1985, when France (Euro 84 champion) beat Uruguay (Copa América 83 champion) 2-0 in Parque de los Princes, Paris. The meeting between Argentines and Italians will be on Wednesday 1st June, starting at 16.45 (Argentine time), on the legendary London court.

The city and the date were already scheduled, but neither the stadium nor the schedule had been confirmed until today. “Twenty-nine years after its last edition, the relaunch of this legendary football match is the result of the long-standing partnership between UEFA and CONMEBOL and will serve as a catalyst for the global development of football, bringing together countries, continents and cultures. At the same time, it shows fans around the world that football can be a force for good in turbulent times,” they pointed out from the organization.

The last time Argentina and Italy saw each other was before the World Cup in Russia: that friendly (played at the Manchester City stadium) was favorable for the South Americans (2-0), for the goals of Éver Banega and Manuel Lanzini. The record marks that they crossed each other on 15 occasions, with 4 albicelestes victories, 6 azzurras and 5 draws.
