The President of Egypt meets with leaders of Israel and the Emirates

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hosted a meeting on Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and UAE leader Mohamed bin Zayed, the Egyptian presidency said.

The meeting, which took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, a seaside resort on the Red Sea, focused “especially on energy and food security” in the context of the war in Ukraine, according to presidential spokesman Basam Radi.

Egypt, which imports 85% of its wheat and 73% of its sunflower oil from Ukraine and Russia, has been hit hard by the unprecedented rise in grain and oil prices following the Russian invasion.

On Monday, the Egyptian pound lost almost 17% of its value, according to the country's central bank. The tripartite meeting was confirmed by the official news agency of the Emirates, WAM.

Egypt is the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979 and the United Arab Emirates normalized its relations with Israel in 2020.
