Videos filmed by passers-by and shared on social media captured the moment when a civilian killed the attacker who killed at least four people in an alleged terrorist attack on Tuesday in Beersheva, southern Israel.
“He seemed to be a single terrorist who set out to stab himself,” said police spokesman Eli Levy on Channel 13 TV. “A civilian took the initiative and shot and killed him.”
According to the newspaper Hareetz, the civilian who neutralized the attacker was a bus driver at the scene.
There was no immediate attribution of responsibility. Israeli media reports identified the attacker as an Arab citizen of Israel, a former high school teacher who had been imprisoned for alleged links to the Islamic State.
The Magen David Adom ambulance service said that three women and one man were killed by the assailant, who perpetrated the attack at a gas station and an open-air shopping mall, and that at least two other people were injured, one of them seriously.
Pending further details, the victims would include two women aged 35 and 40 respectively. The Israeli Police described the incident as a “suspected terrorist attack”. These are the deadliest attacks in Israel in years.
Tensions have been mounting in Israel and the Palestinian territories as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan approaches in April this year, a period when violence has erupted in the past.
