In the Colombian capital, various complaints have been filed in public and private educational institutions, the vast majority of which have been focused on the violation of the rights of minors and are related to sexual offences. However, on March 22, the case of a minor who was the victim of a teacher who assaulted her with a pencil was revealed.

According to El Tiempo, the student's mother said that when she picked up the girl she noticed some marks she had on her head. At first he thought it might be an accident, but when he looked in detail, he realized that the girl had several stitches and became worried.

When she inquired with the minor about what would have happened to her, the girl told her that it was because one of her teachers assaulted her since she did not know how to pronounce a word and do her homework slowly. The mother of the minor proceeded to take her to the authorities and they sent her to Medicinal Legal where they assured that despite the pain caused by the punches, the child is in good health.

For its part, the Ministry of Education (SED) ruled on the case and made it clear that the institution, moreover, does not have the proper papers to function. The institution indicated that it is investigating and that while the results are coming out, it gave a license to the professor accused of the facts while she is conducting the investigation.

Let us remember that this would be the third public complaint against an institution where children's rights are violated. The first took place at Marymount College, where a female student reported that she was a victim of sexual abuse by a physical education teacher, who is now under investigation. The teacher was also denounced by former students of the educational institution who indicated that the situation had been reported for ten years.

Another case occurred at the Venecia Nuevo Muzú School, in the town of Tunjuelito, where two students reported that they were victims of sexual abuse by a substitute teacher. The case has already been reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF).

Claudia López and Prosecutor Barbosa to Meet to Face Sexual Abuse in Schools

The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, confirmed that this Friday, March 18, she will meet with the Attorney General of the Nation, Francisco Barbosa, at 4:00 in the afternoon. The president will present a strategy to strengthen the route of attention, investigation and prosecution of complaints of abuse and sexual violence against children in the city's educational institutions.

“The Prosecutor of the Nation, Francisco Barbosa, has confirmed to me that tomorrow Friday at 4:00 in the afternoon he is receiving us. He has a total commitment like that of our Ministry of Education and we have from the Mayor's Office of Bogotá,” said the mayor at a press conference held in the town of Barrios Unidos.

It should be recalled that the meeting was raised after several cases of sexual abuse were heard in schools in Bogotá. In fact, the Ministry of Security indicated that so far this year there have been 702 cases in the capital, of which 276 are children under 14 years of age, that is, about 40% of the reported cases.

Faced with this situation, the mayor explained that she will propose to the Prosecutor to repeat the strategy that has been put forward by the District in cases of violence against women. “It is working well to prosecute homicides,” said López and believes that if the same procedure is applied in public and private schools in Bogotá, it will be possible to “prosecute violence against children and young people.”
