The legislative elections that took place on March 13 left citizens, political parties and movements dissatisfied, so much so that they continue to demand the resignation of Registrar Alexander Vega. The performance of the senior official, according to them, does not represent confidence to be able to follow the presidential elections and increases the distrust that Colombians have of the institutions.
A lot of evidence was shared on social networks that demonstrated irregularities in the pre-counting process such as the alteration of the E-14 formats, the lack of counting votes from thousands of tables around the country, complaints about vote purchases and so on. A call was even made for a recount considering that for many it was an attempt at fraud and for other problems of the jurors due to poor training.
Following the second hypothesis about the problems faced by some jurors, from the Registrar's Office, Vega pointed out that some investigations are being carried out on juries, which were part of the day, since it seems that there was a possible sabotage.
“We are going to compel copies because we must know what the objective of some jurors was to cross out a result that was already there. There are actions in bad faith and we have information that judges have summoned juries to ratify forms E14 ″, said the government official of Iván Duque.
He added that these errors could not be presented in such great magnitudes, since before voting the juries were trained and the respective printed information was given.
“The jurors not only had the training, but within the manual they had inside the table was the indication that they should be careful, and above all, to be very careful when locating the voting of non-preferred lists,” said the registrar.
The investigations will be led by the Prosecutor's Office, which will have the final say in this entire process. Let us remember that electoral crimes can carry a penalty of between 3 and 4 years of imprisonment, depending on their classification.
For example, in the alteration of the election results, the authorities state that those found guilty should serve a sentence of 4 to 8 years in prison, while refusal to register carries a penalty of 1.3 to 4.5 years in prison.
On the other hand, the registrar, who was named the best government official last year, announced a national recount for the results of the upper house, although he did not give much detail as to how the process will be carried out.
“In order to safeguard the institutionality, in order to reach the electoral truth and with the presence of the president of the union; we have made the decision today, according to the countless inconsistencies of the E-14 forms to the Senate, as a national registrar I will again request the count of all Senate tables of the Republic,” Vega announced on Monday.
And he confirmed that everything was thanks to the mistakes of the citizens: “They are human factors, there is no bad faith, I presume. There are some malicious actions that we are already going to compel the Prosecutor's Office, the Attorney General's Office by the juries, but in order to give peace and transparency to the process, we are going to ask the National Electoral Council to authorize the counting of all the country's tables for the Senate corporation.”
