On the afternoon of this Tuesday, March 22, the Santander tennis player Daniel Galán Elahi qualified for the main draw of the 2022 edition of the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami.
Good news for Colombian tennis and in particular for Galán who comes from participating the previous year in this competition after being eliminated in the round of 32 against Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
Well, the coffee tennis player who is ranked 118th in the ATP standings, beat Argentina's Nicolás Kicker (number 203 in the world) this afternoon and will be part of the first round of the tournament in Florida.
With partials of 5-7, 6-3 and 6-4, Galán came back in the last two sets and secured his place among the top 64 competitors in Miami after having served as a match when he was 5-2 in the final game.
It is worth remembering that Galán failed to qualify for the main draw of the Indian Wells Open, also in the United States, on March 9 when he disputed the qualification against local Jeffrey Hohn Wolf.
However, this time he started his way in Miami by defeating American guest Martin Damm (670th) on Monday, March 21 in two sets of 6-3 and 6-4.
The start of this new edition of the Miami Masters 1000 is just hours away. The contest, which will start on March 23, has its main draw confirmed and the best pre-qualifiers already know their potential rivals.
In the case of Galán, the Colombian is the ninth seed of the Miami Open and his name will be installed on the remaining eleven squares available in the first round of the tournament.
The first seed, Daniil Medvedev, will make his direct debut in the second round against the winner of the match between Federico Delbonis (36th) and Andy Murray (85th). On the other hand, Alexander Zverev will do the same against the winner of the match between a Qualy or Borna Coric (166th) while Stefanos Tsitsipas will play against a qualifier or Daniel Altmaier (69th).
Daniel is coming from winning this year's ATP Challenger 250 champion in Concepción, Chile, on January 23 after being eliminated in the first rounds of the Adelaide Open and the Australian Open in the men's singles category.
In Cordoba, Argentina, he suffered the same fate on February 4, falling in the quarterfinals against Diego Schwartzman and then fell in his debuts in Rio de Janeiro, Santiago de Chile and qualifying for Indian Wells in California.
As for Taylor Fritz, the last winner of the Indian Wells Masters 1000, he will face a qualifier (such as Galán) or Botic van de Zandschulp (42nd). In addition, other potential second-round duels could be: Andrey Rublev against Nick Kyrgios or Adrian Mannarino; Matteo Berrettini against Juan Manuel Cerúndolo or Dusan Lajovic; Diego Schwartzman against Richard Gasquet or a qualifier.
The potential quarterfinal duels would look like this: Medvedev vs. Hubert Hurkacz (10th), Tsitsipas vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime (9th), Rublev vs. Berrettini and Casper Ruud vs. Zverev.
