Colombia's second racket in the Davis Cup announced the end of his professional career

Alejandro González was among the top 100 tennis players in the ATP ranking

One of the Colombian tennis players who was featured in the Davis Cup series and spoke about on the ATP circuit was Alejandro González. The Antioquian broke the news of his retirement from tennis this Tuesday, March 22, within the framework of the M25/W25 'Dove Men+Care Open 'that takes place in Medellín and which will be his penultimate tournament as a professional before playing his last matches at the Challenger in Pereira next week.

'Gonzo' was born on February 7, 1989 and had an outstanding step on the youth circuit where it became 28 in the world in 2007. He won four titles in singles and five in doubles, some of them in major events such as the Inka Bowl in Peru (Grade 2), the Città di Santa Croce in Italy (Grade 1) and the Barranquilla Cup in Colombia (Grade 1).

His first steps in professionalism were made in 2004, at the age of 15, in Futuro de Colombia tournaments and he played the first Challengers in 2006 when he did so in Bogotá. In that circuit he would have an exceptional step where he managed to win four titles (Salinas 2013, Medellín 2013, Sao Paulo 2013 and Córdoba 2014), but in total he won 11 crowns adding the ITF events.

He made the jump to the ATP in 2010 when he first played an event of this level at the ATP 250 in San Jose, in qualifying, while his first Grand Slam experience was in 2012 in Australia, also in the qualifying phase. It was precisely at the first Grand Slam of the year that he achieved his best ranking victory: in 2015 he beat Fabio Fognini (18 in the world) in four sets for the first round. He also reached the second round at Roland Garros (2014) and the US Open (2014).

Another of the great memories it leaves is that match against Novak Djokovic (then #2 in the world) in the third round of Indian Wells 2014, where it came to be equal and with many chances of winning.

However, if there was one tournament where Gonzalez achieved an outstanding performance, it was in the Davis Cup, an event where he debuted in 2014 and won memorable victories that helped the country stay with several series. In the retina will be his two victories against Uruguay, as a visitor in 2015, or that of the last point against Brazil in the 2018 tie in Barranquilla.
