Brussels, 22 Mar Belgian Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke said on Tuesday that he is “a little concerned” about the perception he observes among the population that the pandemic is over, after Belgium relaxed restrictions in early March. “I'm a little worried. With (...) the lifting of a series of measures, people think that the virus is a thing of the past,” Vandenbroucke said in a speech to the Belgian Parliament. The minister stressed that the numbers of hospitalizations have increased again, which “shows that the epidemic is not a thing of the past”, and said that although the epidemiological situation is now controlled, “it does not mean that after the summer we will not be under the storm again.” Therefore, he appealed to a “positive culture” about the use of the mask. The use of the mask indoors ceased to be mandatory in Belgium on March 7, except for a few exceptions such as public transport, hospitals and nursing homes, but in bars and restaurants, schools, cinemas or shops it is no longer necessary. The Belgian Government has eliminated virtually all restrictions due to the pandemic, so that the hospitality industry no longer has time limits and the covid certificate is not required to access the premises. The average number of hospital admissions is 169 per day in the last week, according to data published today by the public institute Sciensano, an increase of 11% compared to the previous week. Covid cases have also increased, with an average of 9,953 per day, which represents an increase of 25% compared to the previous week. On the other hand, deaths have fallen by 15% in the last week, with an average of 16 people per day. In a population of 11.4 million inhabitants, 61 per cent of Belgians already have the booster dose, although there are differences between regions of the country, ranging from 47 per cent coverage in Brussels to 84 per cent in Flanders (north of the country), and 66 per cent in Wallonia (south).
