The election of the new consortium that will restore the iconic Amira de la Rosa Theatre in Barranquilla was brought forward by almost six months. Although at the beginning of the year the Banco de la República, the entity responsible for this process, assured that the election would be made in the first quarter of 2023, it will now be this July. The decision, as reported by the broadcaster on March 22, was taken to “continue to advance the intervention process” of the cultural space.

It should be recalled that the bank has already shortlisted six companies that submitted projects to intervene Amira. Among the firms are two Barranquilla construction companies, one Colombian-Italian, one from Antioquia and two from Bogotá. In the end, only one can be chosen to carry out the restoration work. In addition, the construction of new spaces in the theater environment is also contemplated.

The Banco de la República revealed that on March 11, the six interested firms attended an informative meeting in which they were explained the details and scope of the development of the designs and preparation of specifications. Subsequently, the companies visited the Amira de la Rosa Theater and looked directly at the challenges they would face in this project.

It should be remembered that the bank's board of directors assured at the beginning of the year that to choose the contractor it will review the designs and is issuing the respective annotations of each one. In addition, there are focus groups made up of local experts, cultural managers, children, youth and “regular” theater attendees who will be listened to in order to make decisions based on the particularities required by the city.

The objective is that this year the chosen design will be delivered to the Ministry of Culture for “review and acceptance”. It should be mentioned that this stage is vital because, as it is a heritage site and cultural asset, approval is needed from the Government before the works begin

The process must be speeded up because the Banco de la República committed that the work will be ready by 2027. It should be recalled that since the middle of last year, the issuer announced that it would fully assume the investment to restore the cultural complex.

“We estimate that the work will take place in two years. And in late 2026, early 2027, we hope to give the Barranquilleros a new cultural complex of the Banco de la República in Barranquilla. Completely new with very well made surrounding areas, with the best technological advances to make it a great cultural center and continue to be the benchmark for culture in Barranquilla and the Caribbean,” Restrepo projected in dialogue with the regional newspaper El Heraldo.

This announcement generates peace of mind in the barranquilleros, as the current state of Amira is worrying. A study published last year revealed that the iconic theater, which has been closed since 2016, suffers severe damage to its infrastructure that could compromise the lives of people entering the place.

Over the past six years, citizens have held marches and sittings demanding that the theater be intervened. Although the reopening will take a while, having a deadline to re-enter Amira is taken positively. There are those who ask that the works be expedited and delivered at a closer date, but from BanRepública they assure that this is not possible because certain stages and requirements must first be met.
