Two former police officers linked to the CJNG sentenced to 77 years in prison

Pedro Sánchez Gama, alias Costeño, and Ruperto Ríos Rodríguez, el Firmes, both identified as former municipal police officers linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), were sentenced to 77 years in prison for the crimes of organized crime (against health and kidnapping), illegal deprivation of liberty ( hijacking) and qualified vehicle theft.

Both are credited with belonging to the organization led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, el Mencho, in the municipality of La Barca, Jalisco, where their main function was to monitor the movement of military and police, as well as to execute illegal acts in the states of Michoacán and Jalisco, mainly kidnappings and operations of narcomenudeo.

Through the Office of the Specialized Prosecutor for Organized Crime (FEMDO), and as a result of the investigative work coordinated by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), arrest warrants were obtained against both former police officers, which was completed in January 2014.

After their arrest they were transferred to the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation # 4 “Northwest”, Tepic Nayarit, however, they were later transferred to the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation # 7 “CPS-Michoacán”.

A supervising judge handed down a conviction against them for the above-mentioned crimes and imposed a sentence of 77 years, six months in prison and a fine of 658,300.50 pesos, as well as disqualification from holding any public office, employment or commission for a period equal to the imprisonment sentence imposed.

On March 10, an ambush in the streets of Jalisco claimed the lives of two municipal police officers who were attending a collision at kilometer 86+900 of the free highway to Morelia, in the municipality of Jocotepec.

The accident occurred at the height of the gap called Zapotitlán Hidalgo, on this stretch of highway. In that place, a group of armed civilians, aboard a pick-up truck, came forward and opened fire on the uniformed men, who were struck down.

In addition, one man and one woman, members of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Jocotepec, were injured by bullets. An operation was immediately managed and launched with authorities from all three levels of government to find those responsible for the aggression.

A second crime occurred in the town of Betulia, located in Lagos de Moreno. A confrontation took place at the site between elements of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and members of a criminal group.

According to the first reports, the soldiers were carrying out their surveillance tour on the border with Encarnación de Díaz when they ran into these subjects and started a confrontation that, as a preliminary result, left one soldier injured.
