Heavy storms that hit the north island of New Zealand left at least three people dead when a fishing boat sank and caused chaos in Auckland, the country's largest city, authorities said Monday.

Police indicated that three bodies were recovered and two others were missing after the fishing boat sank on Sunday night, while five people were rescued from the rough sea.

Two air force planes and one naval ship participated in the operation to locate the missing, the military said.

The storm advanced south and hit Auckland on Monday morning with heavy rain.

The floods cut roads, while schools remained closed and boat transport services were suspended due to floods.

The weather service indicated that six storms were heading south and would reach the city of Hamilton on Monday afternoon.

“These storms are expected to be accompanied by torrential rain and damaging gusts of wind,” warned the service, which recommended that residents stay indoors.
