Before the four days of carnival held year after year in Barranquilla, there is a pre-carnival season, in which several parties are held that serve as preparation. Within a week of the start of the main events, there are still activities in the city that locals and tourists can enjoy.
Among the most important activities that will take place in this last week of pre-carnival, two stand out: the Viva la Tradición Festival and the Coronation of the Queen of Carnival 2022.
As for the former, this whole festive bridge takes place in the Sacred Heart Park. The acoustic shell of this space will present 200 folklore groups from the department who will present their costumes and choreographies in order to gain special recognition for their work. In addition, depending on the quality of their presentations, they will be assigned the order to be organized in the main Carnival parades.
It should be noted that among the participants, there are 68 groups of ancestral dances that come from different municipalities and districts of the Atlantic. It should be noted that these groups participated in the dossier that supported the candidacy of the Barranquilla Carnival as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity to UNESCO in 2003.
This event is free and to enter only the covid vaccination card with full scheme and the mask must be presented. Citizens should also keep in mind that for the event the authorities keep 80th Street between races 42F and 42E and Carrera 42F between 80th street and 42E partially closed. The measure runs until Monday, March 21 at 11:00 p.m.
As for the queen's coronation, it usually takes place two days before the official start of Carnival, that is, this year the date will be March 24. The event will be held at the Romelio Martinez Stadium starting at 8:00 p.m.
Not much information has yet been revealed about this event, what is confirmed is that Carlos Vives will be one of the artists who will sing in the show.
In addition to these events, the organization Carnaval de Barranquilla S.A.S. announced that on Sunday, March 20, the Tomas de Barrio Andina fair, organized by the Spin Agency, will be held. For this event, the following road closures have been scheduled: race 10 between 45C1 and 45C5 streets and 45C2 street between races 9G and 10B: Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March 2022. Likewise, on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, the Speed Max Energy Carnival will be held, so 119th Street will be closed between races 12 and 11D.
Simultaneously, this week the La Cueva Foundation also holds the International Carnival of the Arts, a space where “reflection is the spectacle” and the arts and academia merge in face-to-face and virtual talks. It should be noted that in this edition, which is number 16, four characters remembered and loved in the Caribbean will be honored: the writers Gabriel García Márquez and Ramón Illán Bacca and the poet Meira Delmar. The three already departed.
The fourth outstanding will be Cartagena chef Leonor Espinosa.
