The mayor of Metropolitan Lima, Jorge Muñoz Wells, urged the Peruvian National Police to remove the bars that restrict passage to several streets of the Historic Center of Lima and the Plaza de Armas itself, since these not only harm the traffic of pedestrians and tourists, but also that of firefighters and other emergency vehicles.

The bars that close the streets of the Historic Center and the Plaza de Armas not only harm free traffic, tourism and business in the area, they also make it difficult for firefighters to work and put the lives of neighbors at risk. He urged the National Police to withdraw them now! ” said the limeño burgomaster through his Twitter account.

Muñoz accompanied his tweet with two images of a fire engine stopped because the bars impede his passage.

BARS IN THE CENTER OF LIMA

It should be noted that since the 2020 elections the Police have repeatedly placed bars at all accesses to the Plaza de Armas. This is because, since then, political tensions for various reasons have generated several marches that aim to approach the Government Palace or the Congress of the Republic.

This has mainly affected those who have businesses and restaurants in the vicinity of the Plaza de Armas, as their clientele has been reduced.

Authorities often place bars in Junín, Huallaga, Carabaya and Jirón de la Unión streets. Only people who prove to live or work in the area can enter.

The merchants located in the vicinity of the Plaza Mayor have also repeatedly called for the removal of the bars, which has harmed them economically in their businesses, since sales do not even reach 5% and have been forced to lay off workers.

It should be noted that last Sunday, hundreds of demonstrators marched through some streets in downtown Lima to demand the resignation or vacancy of the president of the Pedro Castillo Republic. At the event, it was possible to see some flags of the Peruvian Aprista Party, as well as other politicians and figures opposed to the government.

Around two thousand people gathered on the Field of Mars from 4 in the afternoon and then moved to the Paseo de los Heroes Navales where, at 6 p.m., there was a rally on a mobile platform with speakers that accompanied the march.

OTHER CLAIMS OF JORGE MUÑOZ

It should be noted that this is not the first time that the mayor of Lima has asked the Executive for the occupation of downtown Lima. On March 11, Jorge Muñoz drew the attention of the ministers of state that every Wednesday they use the Plaza Mayor as a parking lot when they leave their cars in the surroundings without respecting that this place is a rigid area, so announced that fines will be imposed next time and the units will be towed to the warehouse of the district municipality.

“I tell the ministers what crown do they have to be able to park in rigid areas? They must be the first to show that standards are for everyone. There is much talk that they are with the people and that things are done for the people, so preach by example, otherwise we will have to take other measures”, warned the bourgomaster.
