GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalan judge Erika Aifán, internationally awarded for her fight against corruption, has resigned from office and will remain out of the country while her judicial situation is resolved.

“They left me no choice,” Aifán The Associated Press said via telephone after submitting his resignation.

Aifán faces at least 20 complaints and four requests for the removal of immunity from the prosecution. Although the magistrate said she does not hold anyone in particular responsible, she argued that the actions of Attorney General Consuelo Porras have played a role in her resignation and temporary exile.

“She has instrumentalized the Public Prosecutor's Office and exercised persecution of those who have worked against impunity and corruption,” Aifán said.
