While we await the premiere of Money Heist: Korea-Joint Economic Area, the South Korean version of the series created by Alex Pina, La Casa de Papel, a spin off that would have the green light to land in 2023 has already been announced. It's about the series, Berlin based on the character we met through La Casa de Papel.
Berlin (Pedro Alonso), this villain and brains of all the robbery together with his brother “El Profesor” (played in the Spanish series by Álvaro Morte) was one of the most admired characters in history and that generated a lot of empathy with the audience. As an antithesis to his brother, Berlin was a man to fear. I didn't have half measures and I was very clear about what I wanted. He did things in his own way under the slogan “the end justifies the means”.
Throughout the seasons that the series lasted, we learned several details about the lives of both robbery brothers, their past and, also, the central role that their father's story played in them. But there is undoubtedly much more to learn and hence the idea of creating this spin off.
Although Alex Pina often played down the idea of creating new stories derived from La Casa de Papel, he eventually succumbed to the idea of making them. Speaking to Oprah Daily, the creator of the series stated: “We have a lot of possibilities for some spinoffs, yes, and I think that's thanks to the strong and powerful identities of the characters. We have always wanted characters to have a very complex layered design. So I think that almost every character in La Casa de papel has a duality that we would like to see in a spin-off. We could see any of them in other contexts,” he said.
Thus, with the announcement of the last episode of La Casa de Papel, it was announced that Berlin would have its own series where all the details of this man would be revealed. His name? Andrew. This is how the announcement came through social networks: “We already met Berlin in #LaCasaDePapel and now it's Andrés de Fonollosa's turn. We can already announce that in 2023 the spin off of his life will come.”
In recent seasons we met a great love from Berlin, Tatiana (played by Diana Gomez) who was part of another of Andrés's truncated relationships and we also learned about the existence of his son. This spin off will surely address the first years of life of Andrés and Sergio (the real name of El Profesor), the link with Palermo (Rodrigo de la Serna) and how he managed to steal the 434 diamonds on the Champs Elysées in Paris.
Although Alonso was only part of the first installment, we have seen him throughout the series with several flashbacks and each appearance became the best moments in history. During an event held in Madrid at the Vistalegre Palace following the end of La Casa de Papel, Alonso also announced that we would have his series and said: “Little brothers, this is a wonderful moment. It is a memorable moment because it is the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. We walked towards the unknown. We are ready to break it,” he said to the euphoria of the convened audience.
So far only Pedro Alonso has been confirmed but it is estimated that both De la Serna, Morte and Gómez are part of this new series. The recordings would be this year (there is no confirmed start date yet) that would generate a premiere only in 2023.
