The European Union (EU) wants to help Ukrainian farmers prepare their next harvest despite the war, with fuel and fertilizer contributions while providing food aid to the population, European Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski announced Monday.

“Aid will be given to Ukrainian farmers who need 50,000 tons of fuel to be able to work in their fields and keep their production at minimum levels to survive,” the Polish Commissioner explained after a meeting of European Ministers of Agriculture.

“Transporting aid across Poland, from a logistical point of view, is the most efficient solution,” and Warsaw “is ready to participate,” added Wojciechowski, who urged action before the spring boreal.

Meeting in Brussels, the ministers of the 27 spoke via videoconference with their Ukrainian counterpart, Roman Leshchenko.

“He paid tribute to two farmer friends killed under bombs while working in the fields,” and cited the country's farmers' strong determination to cultivate their land despite the Russian invasion, the commissioner added.

He indicated that the conference had a “very strong” moment, when the minister had to withdraw ahead of schedule “due to a bombing alert.”

Before the interruption, the commissioner said, the Ukrainian minister announced the needs of food aid for the Ukrainian population and refugees, support for the agri-food industry and for farmers in terms of fertilizers, seeds and energy.
