In the midst of a difficult start to the season, Mexico's America took a break again this Sunday after winning 3-0 against Toluca for the 11th date of the 2022 Clausura tournament. The team from the 'Águilas', where the Colombian Roger Martínez plays, won again after six rounds, so he was able to move up the standings.
The Cartagena footballer, who was included in the starting lineup, was responsible for opening the score in the 7th minute of the first half. America played a short corner kick, which was received by Paraguayan steering wheel Richard Sánchez. After cutting to the apex of the big area, the player 'Guaraní' made a cross at the height of the penalty spot, where Martinez anticipated the defenders and, with a slight touch, managed to deflect the ball to overcome goalkeeper Gustavo Ramírez.
The second score for the 'Águilas' came in the 15th minute with a free-kick collection by Diego Valdés to the stick of the goalkeeper's left hand. Toluca, who suffered from a lack of concentration in the first stage of the match, was trying to recover from 2-0 when the third celebration came: Mexican striker Henry Martín threw a cross from the right wing that midfielder 'Azteca' Alejandro Zendejas connected headfirst (18').
Just seconds after the third conquest, Roger even had the chance to expand the result even further. A leaked pass left him hand in hand with Ramirez, who came out to reduce the angle of shot and, in an attempt to overcome it, Martinez stung her unsuccessfully.
The Colombian attacker scored his second goal in the 2022 Clausura Tournament, after the one converted against Atlético de San Luis on February 6. So far, Roger has played eight commitments in this competition, starting five of them. In addition, he reached 30 celebrations since he arrived at the institution, in June 2018.
With the recent victory, America scored 10 points, which allowed him to rise to the 15th place of the championship. The goal for the 'Eagles' is now set to add more wins in order to be able to enter the reclassification of the league, a quota that is obtained from 12th place. Santos Laguna is the team that retains this position with 12 units.
Looking ahead to FIFA, when the Colombia team will seek qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against Bolivia and Venezuela, America will take the opportunity to play two friendly matches against Tigres and Rayados, in the United States. Let us remember that the Argentine, Fernando Ortiz, was appointed as interim coach after the dismissal of his compatriot Santiago Solari, in early March.
Although in Mexico several sectors of public opinion considered that it was not the time to dismiss Solari, the directors recently confirmed that Ortiz will continue to lead the squad for the remainder of the 2022 Clausura. Depending on the results obtained, there is a possibility that he will be appointed as a property technician.
“Santiago [Baños], the president, told us the continuity until the end of the championship and I proposed short goals to the players, I can't visualize beyond the match with Toluca, it's the initial match, achieve that victory and so think ahead. If we thought about anything else, it is a serious mistake,” said the Argentine coach in statements to TUDN.
On the next date, Roger Martinez and America will face Necaxa, as a visitor. The initial whistle is agreed for Saturday, April 2, starting at 8:00 p.m. (Colombian time).
