MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins were looking for a big bat. Now, they trust that the Most Valuable Player of the last World Series will be of help to them.
A person with direct knowledge of the operation said Saturday that the Marlins reached an agreement with Jorge Soler, for three years and 36 million dollars. The source spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, in view of the fact that the agreement depends on a medical examination and has not been formally announced.
Soler has an option to terminate the contract after the 2022 and 23 seasons.
MLB.com was the first media to report that both parties had reached an agreement.
Soler has twice won the World Series. He helped the Chicago Cubs to be crowned in 2016 and surprised last fall, with their key performance for the Braves championship.
He hit for .300 in Atlanta's win over Houston in six games. He hit three home runs, all of them memorable.
He landed a home run in the first round of the World Series, to become the first baseball player to achieve the feat in 117 editions of the Autumn Classic. In the fourth game, he broke the tie with a garrotazo as an emergent, putting Atlanta to a championship victory.
And in the sixth match, he hit a three-run home run in the third inning to open the board and lead the Braves to the coronation.
Kim Ng, general manager of the Marlins, said at the opening of the preseason camp that the team needed to meet two needs: that of a fielder — especially a central one — and that of a batter.
Soler has mainly served as a right ranger, but believes that he can fill vacancies. In the field of batting there is not much doubt about it.
He has hit 121 home runs and 343 RBIs in 661 games during his career with Kansas City, the Cubs and Atlanta. He led the American League in 2019, with 48 homers, and shook another 27 in 149 games the previous season, with the Royals and the Braves.
Soler defected from Cuba in 2011, settled in Haiti and made his debut in the majors in 2014.
