A week after the legislative elections and inter-party consultations were held in Colombia, the controversy over inconsistencies in the pre-counting of votes, as well as the allegations by fraud, continues to grow. The National Registrar has made progress in the process of inspecting votes, however, several political sectors have requested a full count.
“There is no fraud in Colombia and there is no possibility of fraud in Colombia,” Registrar General Alexander Vega recently said, dismissing allegations of irregularities in the congressional elections. Álvaro Uribe, for example, has emphasized that “this result cannot be accepted” from the official Senate count, which ended up subtracting 54,608 votes from the Democratic Center.
On the other hand, in the ranks of the Historical Pact, the picture is more encouraging, since, according to the revisions, it won three more seats than they had reported in the March 13 elections, and politicians such as César Pachón would join the legislative group headed by Senator Gustavo Bolivar. With this, the left-wing political alliance would win 19 seats in Congress, establishing itself as the most voted in the elections.
The Hope Center was one of the coalitions that lost votes in the last count, as well as most political teams. However, this Saturday, the presidential candidate, Sergio Fajardo, spoke in front of the crosses held by Gustavo Petro and Álvaro Uribe through social networks.
The first one denounced acts of corruption in the pre-count, as more than half a million votes for the Historical Pact have been recovered over the hours. And the second stated that there was “a self-theft of voting information” by Petro “so that it appears to him later and say that there was attempted fraud.”
“Petro and Uribism, representing today in 2022 by 'Fico' Gutiérrez, announce that they will not respect the results of the elections if they don't win. This is the first chapter of the coming war, a war that can take our country ahead. I'm going to take care of Colombia. Trust me! ”, said Fajardo in a video shared on his Twitter account.
After the results of the interpardist consultations, which left 'Fico' with more than two million votes, were known, he invited Fajardo to “leave the egos” to start talks. However, the former governor of Antioquia has made it clear that he will not make alliances with him: “Federico is a very dear person. Obviously, he does very well in debates and is affectionate and all that, but he is the candidate of (Iván) Duque and Uribe, they can make him up”, he said recently at the 'Debate of the Regions'.
For his part, Humberto de la Calle, elected to the Senate by the Green Alliance Center Esperanza Coalition, said that the country should not fall into the same mistake as the 2018 elections, when the population chose between Petro and Iván Duque, who at that time received the support of former President Uribe.
“The ravages of polarization: Petro was the first to stir up the ghost of fraud. Now Uribe, in a subversive attitude, proposes not to know the result. We cannot be condemned to choose between Petro and what Uribe says. Cool head. Institutions before populism,” he wrote on his Twitter.
For now, President Duque announced that next Tuesday a meeting of the Electoral Guarantees Bureau will be held to clarify the doubts left by the elections in Colombia. “The idea is that, once the explanations that exist on this subject have been evaluated, measures can also be taken to prevent similar situations,” added the Colombian president from the Casa de Nariño.
