The journalist and trans activist Gianna Camacho said that she already has her new National Identity Document (DNI) with her name and took the opportunity to tell, on her Twitter account, everything that happened to obtain her identity card.
“In September 2018, with my colleagues from the Unicxs Project and the LGBT Human Rights Observatory of the Cayetano Heredia University, I was at the CONACOD of the Ministry of Justice in front of the Reniec Public Prosecutor to question why they appeal the favorable judgments of the judiciary,” he said.
The activist explained that after judges issue judgments in favor of rectifying the DNI data of trans people, Reniec appeals the sentences, seeking the Peruvian State. “I always wondered how it affects the state where my name is Gianna, Leyla, Sandy. In what?” , he added.
“I remember that the prosecutor was surprised when we showed her the texts of the appeals, for example, for them genital reassignment surgery was a “mutilation,” she wrote.
Camacho recounted an experience of discrimination, because the adviser who accompanied the prosecutor - who was in charge of giving those answers - “was unable to look at me, he never greeted me and when I was talking, it seemed that they had put a garbage bag next to him, his body expression betrayed him.”
“The outrage I felt by public officials like him is that I set out to invest energy in gaining recognition of my identity,” he said.
The journalist commented that after the session of the National Commission Against Discrimination (CONACOD), a report was issued concluding that trans people must have a representative DNI. “Reniec pledged not to appeal the name change sentences but the sex change sentences,” he said.
Gianna Camacho said that for many years she had to endure the eyes of the bank staff or institutions to which she showed her identity document and on several occasions they accused her “of wanting to impersonate someone to collect money” and with the pandemic this grew even more.
“I must be honest and tell me that I could have changed my ID card a long time ago. Lawyers and studies approached me offering to take my case, but I did not want that privilege, I wanted the State to give it to me because it belongs to me, however, the pandemic changed my mind, the idea of leaving this life began to turn around with a name that did not make visible the woman I was in life... so, talking with Leyla Huerta (another trans woman), motivated me to take the big step and the best thing, I did the legal process with a lawyer 100 points! Dr. Fhran Medina,” he said.
BIRTHDAY GIFT
The trans activist said that, in July 2021, as a birthday present, she had a hearing and after the judge heard her, she granted the rectification of her names, which was what she asked because sex change is another trial.
“Since I went to Reniec with my court ruling to start the process of change, I couldn't be calm. I thought “right now they tell me it's not appropriate” or something similar... I knew it wasn't, but that fear was always there. But nothing happened and I already have my ID,” he said.
Although she already has the names on her DNI when she went to Claro Peru, she felt very uncomfortable because on the screen they put her previous name and only the initial of her surname, although it should be the other way around, she reported.
“Now they are going to call me by my name, I thought, and I assumed that it would be the last time I would have to endure that kind of moment, happily the boy who attended me called me by my last name, as it should be, always everywhere to call for my surnames,” he said.
Camacho said that he will now change the name of his degrees and certificates of studies and work, and that one of the reasons he could not study anything is because of the changes he eventually had to make with his name.
“Thanks again to Dr. Fhran Medina for his empathy and for accompanying me on this journey, also my family for their unconditional support... I know that there is still a long way to go to enjoy full citizenship, but that's where we go”, he concluded.
